snow plow for truck

Where I live we have to plow our own road, about 3/4 of a mile.
We have an association and our old truck and plow died so need advice.

Which is better a 5 speed manual or an automatic?

We have a chance to buy a used Boss plow? How are they?

Should we buy a 3/4 ton truck? All this truck will be used for is plowing.

Thanks
Charlie

If I were you, I would go with an automatic I guess. I've plowed with both, and its alot nicer not having to shift and such. Depending on which plow you get, I would get a 3/4 ton truck. Boss makes a great plow....however if that were to fall through check out Hiniker plows as well. They are heavy built, high quality plows as well. I would get a V plow as well, straight plows to me aren't near as handy as a V. Hope this helps.

^^^x2^^^ Boss is well built if you can get it for the right price I would. I currently run 2 Hiniker V Blades with the poly face and have had good luck and customer service. If you are only rolling snow to the sides and keeping up before it gets too deep, a V Plow may be overkill cost wise. If you can afford a V you will never go back.

I would go 3/4 ton and auto for sure. Good luck. EW

The V is great! (Mine is a Boss)

Absolutely no comparison to a strait blade!

Whe you git a big dump, you can punch through a LOT easier. And then you can tilt it to finish.

The scoop feature is great in more open spaces. But if only using for a road ... ???

Automatics and plows just never went well together. You still hafta shift fwd to rev, and for longer distances like your road application - it is nice to put in gear and just go. The newer handheld controls make this job SO much nicer than the old cable drives! :light:

I would opt for the 3/4 ton as well.

A v plow is a must. The new boss plows are very easy to hook up. I plowed for years with a straight blade and won't go back. My truck is an automatic, but I wish it was a standard. Either way you must treat the trans with care.

There's less to go wrong in a 5 speed! My Cummins has a built auto which is nice because I plow 30 residential driveways and a 1/4 long road. A V is not needed, My county in Colorado averages 350" per year, I run a 9'6" Meyer straight blade with wings.

Cant believe all you guys love your v-plows. Our straight blades clean up much better, and I can work twice as fast with a straight blade. The only place that the v works well is in small parking lots, and it still leaves a mess. The cutting edges wear uneven and they leave a lot of snow behind. A straight blade with wings has been the ticket for us.

I do a couple streets like you are talking about and I can get the road opened up so much quicker and cleaner with one of our straight blades. If the snow is deep enough, you will still have problems getting through it with a v. In 1-2' of heavy snow the plow is still going to lift, even in V.

The heavier the truck the better, they take a beating. If you can find one with a snowplow package its even better.
