Snow bike fenders

Is there a reason for the plastic front and rear fenders on the snow bikes? Could they be removed to save the weight?

Fenders sure get in the way when your manipulating the ski. I just cut my fender down in front and back. I don't get whacked in the head near as much now with the shorter fender. I like the look of the mini-bike fenders that timber sled puts on their bikes. :face-icon-small-coo

It's a huge help keeping powder out of your face in the deep. Almost needs to be wider by the forks and farther out forward. Seem to always get that ribbon of snow shooting out of the front of the ski, ketches some of that also.

I have a supermoto fender on the front of my WR. I don't have a practical reason for having a fender at all, other than without it, it looks like something is missing. Having the shorter supermoto fender is a lot better than stock though. When you're walking around the front of the bike you can step right over the ski instead of having the walk all the way around the tip. It might not sound like a big deal, but when you're struggling in deep snow it makes a lot of difference.

I have done some bikes completely plastic free and my current YZ has a full plastic setup on it. I guess I just always think they look a bit goofy without parts of them, and considering a full plastic kit weights like 5 pounds I don't stress over it. I bet most guys could pull that much moldy trail mix out of the bottom of their packs!

I ran a front fender the first two years, but am not this year and i like it better. No more smacking my head on it when grabbing the front ski, putting wheel dolly off and on,working on it, etc.

The fender held up the headlight housing so I just cut out a small piece of black plastic (from the same material i use for radiator covers and is used for engine shrouds) and bolted that in place with the four fender bolts.

The "fender delete" look is a bit different but, for me, i like it as it is reminiscent of various dual sports and of old Dakar bikes.

I'll be watching for snow spray and deciding if i want to shape a gen 2 headlight housing support that actually extends forward or to the sides to block or deflect snow.

I also removed the stock radiator shrouds after cracking yet another one. Having those gone doesn't look real great so i might try to cut and mold another plastic piece to at least fill in the gas tank indent that the stock shroud typically fills. I've also seen guys cut down stock shrouds so they don't stick forward of the radiator guard which eliminates the shroud from catching on branches or the ground on a wipeout, and cracking.

Is there a reason for the rear fender? Cant remember from my dirt biking days if the fender can be removed without removing other things. Was just curious as everybody is trying to lighten up their sleds.

Unless you have something covering the open tunnel/frame area on your kit, there is a fair bit of snow flying up that direction. I assumed the rear fender was blocking some of that but it is a good question worth a closer look.

As for the removal, mine is integrated into the airbox/battery box and the seat also looks like it rests on part of it and the rear fender and exhaust shroud are all one piece so short of cutting the fender itself shorter, i cant just remove that entire tail section plasitic. But each bike is different so it warrants investigation.

Supermoto

Only purpose for me is looks and to hold the headlight mask on. I went with a Supermoto Fender and now I can see the tip of my ski when riding and it looks that much meaner overall. On the rear fender, I cut the fender extension on my KTM that holds the LED light in, definitely no need for that, especially with TSS.

I personally like the having a front fender, useful for the deflection of powder, for the first year year my blue fender turned white from all the snowbanks i plowed into, decided to cut it back, still enough there for deflecting pow.
This year with new Yeti kit, found it useful to strap my extra gloves and small lunch under there, as the yeti doesn't give you any options of storage on the tunnels, they have a gas can and tunnel rack, was supposed to be ready for Dec 1.
