Snapped off bolt in primary!!!!!

I was changing springs and putting face plate ant 6 bolts back on primary---torquing to 10lbs, when one broke off inside and I can't get it out. What can I do? 3 of the bolts were stripping threads without my realizing it. Am I F'd?:director:

Im confused. Did you use the press tool? or did you try and manhandle it on without removing the primary?

If nothing you have access to like a bolt out kit will get your broken bolt out, you could pull the primary, take it to a machine shop, and they could probably drill a hole in it and get it out. If your other 3 holes are to messed up to have the threads chased, the machine shop could probably bore and tap to the next bigger size bolt. Just make sure you do all six and use six equal lengthed/sized bolts to keep everything in balance. Still might not be a bad idea to have it re balanced after your done.

It is impossible to break the bolts at 10 foot pounds. Maybe your torque wrench is broken? That would explain the stripped holes and broken bolt.

While I am sure it can be fixed it may be cheaper to look into a used clutch.

Ya that---I staggered the bolts like you would a tire on a truck and probably has them 1/2 way in by just finger tightening. How soft are those boltsand what thread pattern do you think they are?

I normally use a press and you can screw them in all the way by hand.

Without one I would try and get all 3 arm started and then work them in a little at a time so you dont wreck the bushing in the cover. The bolts are not soft and 10 foot pounds should not have broke them unless they were damaged somehow.

The bolts are recessed way down in the towers. I have seen them break before on older clutches. Here is the fix we did on an Ultra way back when.

We drilled the cover holes slightly bigger. We then tapped all 6 towers from the very top, down as far was we could with the smalled bolt/tap we could make work, I want to say 5/16". We then replaced all 6 bolts with the new short bolts.

So we ended up with 1 of the old bolt's threaded part stuck in the clutch, but the 6 bolts threaded in higher in the tower if that makes sense.

Now, we did not have it balanced, but that was not the smartest move. But it held for several years after that without issues. These days I would for sure have the clutch rebalanced.

Hmm..

Sound like you need a Welder and A Flat washer!! then weld a nut to the flat washer it will spin right out!!!!

Done this method many many times it works!!

I have fixed 3 clutches that had bolts broken off....2 of them I just took a left hand drill bit in a drill and leaned on hard and they spun right out..the last one I ended up welding thru a 5/16 nut down onto the broken bolt and worked up into the nut...spun right out then ran a bit in just a bit to clean up the hole from the weld...

Been on the road 13 hrs so far with 5 more to go. I borrowed an entire primary from a friend and will deal with mine next week. Will try left hand bit first. Thanks for the ideas.

I just had that happen last week, was able to get it with an easy out. The trick is getting the drilled hole as close to the center of the broken bolt as possible. The way I do this is to use the same diameter bit as the bolt but just drill enough to effectively start a hole in the bolt, then drill the bolt with a smaller bit compatable with your easy out. I have in the past got broken bolts out with left hand drill bits as well and it never hurts to try that first. Pat
