SLP pipe and head vs stock--cooke

Verticle Edge rode 12-31-08 with 2 stock 08-154's and his 09 with pipe and head--stock 08's would NOT come close in the deep powder--the 08's were my buddys everest and my 08x with 09 clutching and neither would climb near as far as the piped 09--so the SLP pipe DOES work and works gooood--i wasnt there to witness this but hope to see first hand in 3 weeks or so---also my sled we geared down to 19 and used the 160-320 08 spring and it lost 2 mph track speed-so were going back to the 20 and stock spring--we also had a shockwave helix in a 08 big bore and that is the cats a$$--were sending them my helix from my 09 to measure up and so they can build a multi reverse angle helix which i think they need--a little less angle would be perfect--the reverse angle helix works great in the deep but was just a little too much angle in our opinion---

Id love to hear a test with just the pipe. The head itself should be a big gain , you take a poor design off install one with a good design and then add a fair bit of compression , Id be betting alot of that gain was the head. sj

i'm sure your correct but last year the 08 with a head and y pipe was about 2 to 3 sleds better on the hill against the exact same stock sled--this year there is waaaaay more difference:confused::D

Wyoming T/A I put an slp y pipe, pipe, and super q can on. I have a spring vibration sound at lower rpm. It bugs the sh!t out of me. Did you have this problem, and if so how did you fix it. I bought shorter tighter springs and that didnt work. Some other guys in McCall have this same problem too. Any info helps thanks Casey.

Putting my SLP pipe, can, head, air intake on today-tommorrow on 09 800X have 350 miles on it all ready. Going to ride Saturday & Sunday.

Take your pipe off and look to see if it has any rub spots on it. It could be laying on frame rivets. You may have to make a little more room for it. I had to it is a close fit.

Thanks everyone, all great ideas. I will consider all of them. I hate that damn noise. Sorry to highjack a thread. Now I just need to save a little money for the slp head. Sounds like everyone is pleased with the results.:beer;

did the 09 with the pipe and head have the intake or any other little mods such as vents from slp or was the sled stock other then pipe and head?

Have any of you guys have the nose cone melt (the honeycomb holes) with your SLP pipe? Mine melted a quarter size hole out of mine 2 weeks ago at Cooke.

Wy TA....I would like to see a Shockwave with a standard progressive (not reverse) with a 10* spread....this we could sell ALOT of!!
We have been playing with a bunch of setup with the reverse helix and the straight shockwave and find both to be a compromise for the hills.
The reverse was a awesome road race setup but showed alot of heat and low track speed on repeated deep climbs. The straight shockwave works "OK" with a good primary setup, we gained 5-7mph on a climb vs the reverse, but not as good as we have seen with our helix.
What have you been doing with main jets and needles shim with SLp pipe and head?? We have 2 '08's ....on with SLP pipe, another with SLP pipe and head, pipe only left stock jetting and pipe/head went to SLP specs....both seem to run fine but I can't say there was a gain besides the weight loss.
What jetting changes do you find makes them work?

we doo have the slp cold air intake on all our piped sleds--shockwave is already making a standard pogressive helix which should be out any time--i'm calling them tomorrow and will update there progress on that---slp pipe only sleds have No shims and 480 jets - short [08] hollow pins---sled with pipe and head have 500 jets and NO shims and short hollow pins as well--both set ups are real safe from what we have seen-we are running them in clicker 4 at cooke [8500-10000 feet]but are down a little on rpms so we think the adjustible helix will allow for lower clicker and 8100 to 8200 rpms-we tried the shims and found them a little sluggish in the mid range so we pulled them back out--

wyta- leave the 160/320...gear back up..19 to small...
wb- the straight is NOT a compromise...the multi was designed to compromise
wyta- I have the new variable...over revs on the trail vs the straight... set at 3 turns out (46/43 is 1 step better than last years factory 46/42 but still over revs on the way in/out with out clicking...works fine in the 4S 1200...

In my testing..a 2008/2009...160/320, 412, stock pin (minor adj for elevation if needed), SW at 3 turns(44.5)...8100-8200 in the pow...8200-8300 on the trail...just had "ANOTHER" customer call from Cooke (on my way out)..3 days riding...NO clicker changes...fastest/best climbing in group...2009 154 all stock 'cept 20 gear and a 470 main jet and magic plugs...BJ

gearing-

2008
146 21 top (stock 23/22 Ok for low/mid els)
154 20 top (stock 21 ok for low els)
163 stock or 20 top for higher els

2009
146 ok (gear up to 23/22 for low/mid els)
154 20 (stock gear ok for low els)
163 stock or 20 top for higher els

BJ--thanks for chiming in--i agree the 19 is too low--we lost 2 mph track speed-- i changed the gear to 19 first and then the 160/320 with the 19 so i'm going to put the 20 back in with the 160 spring--the thing we are finding is the 43-47 helix wont let you get to clicker 4 :(at the desired 8100-8200 rpms so thats our reason for lookin to SW for a less angle but still keep the rev angle---we would really like to run them in clicker 3 at cooke and hold 8100 rpms:D:D--i will say these sleds are running great even down a little on rpms---thanks for your info as always-:beer;:beer;-TA
