SLP M8 pipe rubbing on plenum, anyones else?

I sent them an email, no one answered the phone so they were either busy or closed. I just talked to my dealer and they insisted that i was going to have to buy the whole left side brace for $50.00.....ummmmm probably not. I would make shims out of old mudflaps and glue them on there before i would spend $50 bcuz cat is retarded and doesnt give the part number for that bracket and bumper.

I put about 5 layers of heat tape on, have riden twice, it seems to work alright. I have it in the shop now thinking of cutting a bit of the plemun out and riveting a bent piece of aluminum there and then heat taping the edges. Think that might work?

Mine is also, night try the heat gun and reshaping the plenum. sounds like an easy way to fix it

Here are pictures of a hood with the plenum reshaped (orange hood) and one not reshaped (white hood). As you can see by reshaping its not like you lose any air flow. (sorry didn't take pictures of inside). The curve of the pipe fits nicely.

yo matt, i have a fix for ya, its free and i just gotta find it.....leaving the casa at 8ish, text before and ill swing by your shop:beer;

hood lift

you can kind of see the hood lift in these photos and how much space it leaves for heat to get out. hood forms right around and fits great. use the bottom holes so you get the most lift ie. air flow. We get our RKT lifts from Mt. Baker Moto-Sports they have plenty in stock.

What kind of heat barrier are you using there? Looks much better than standard aluminum tape

First ride with the new SLP pipe set observations:

1. the top of the pipe is rubbing on the bottom of the intake plenum. Yes, it's installed correctly. Anyone else have this problem?

2. The plate underneath the Y pipe needs to be bent way down outta the way of the springs, they can rattle on it under load. not a good sound.

3. that motha gets hot!!! it bit my gloves:(

4. Awesome power, very happy with the powerband.

Any feedback/suggestions appreciated. Thinking about cutting the rubber block under the back of the pipe???

Mine did the exact same thing. My suggestion: Remove the air plenum, then place it on your work bench and heat it up with your heat gun until the plastic becomes soft and flexible. Then gently push your fist in the middle of it (use a glove). Hold your fist in position and hit it with some compressed air and a blow gun to cool it back down. It'll freeze it in the new position. Just 1/4" or so is enough. Then contact SLP and buy some of their heat insulating tape (the stuff with the fiberglass in it) and cover the bottom of the air plenum with it after installing. Problem solved. Sled runs great and the intake plenum stays nice and cool now. No more pipe rubbing and no hood lift kit necessary.

Got everything fixed up tonight! I got my rkt hood lift in the mail today ($50.00 :eek:, didnt they used to be like $30? its just a little piece of aluminum) and then i bought a rubber mud flap and some 5 minute epoxy. I cut out a piece of rubber the size of the bumper under the pipe, expoxied it on and good to go. The hood lift gave me plenty of clearance between the pipe and plenum so no more rubbing on the plenum or spark plug cap.

who put those layers of heat tape on??? ;)

and you have a shop???? man, where have I been??

but seriously.... hood lift kits for $50? cutting the rubber block (which lowers the angle of the pipe, thus changing the air flow[albeit slightly], and potentially compromising performance)??

We've only got a coupla days riding at revy with the "5-layer-mod" and no ill effects... I'm going with that for now - just keeping a close eye on it....

definately LOVE the extra zip of the SLP, though! :D

I rivited a couple small pieces of 3/4" rubber hose I had lying around where the hood closes, same concept as the hood lift. Keeps the hood up off the pipe a bit and lets some heat out. Best of all it didn't cost anything.

I should add, NO two SLP pipes are the same,
In my case the one on my sled hit (before mod) and the one on my wifes sled did not(yes I changed hoods back and forth to see if it was the hoods)

As always your results may vary

additional clearance

After reading everyones post on miminum pipe clearance. I thought I would add a little to what I already had. Rather than change the angle of the pipe like some have done by cutting the rubber pad.

I chose to remove the left half of the air plemum and I rented a heat gun from the local lumber yard. Easy fix, now instead of 1/2 inch clearance i have a good inch now between the pipe and the plastic plemum.

Thanks to the guys that mentioned it in earlier posts. I now feel a lot happier with the additional clearance. I also put back on several layers of aluminum heat tape insulation.

And this only cost $3.00 to rent the heat gun.

Thanks. Rickm

I just finished remolding the plenum with a heat gun. Definitely the way to fix the clearance issue. have about an inch now. It was rubbing before.
Took about 5 minutes total. I did peel back the foil tho, you will spend all day trying to heat up the plastic thru the foil. And be sure to wear gloves.

I do not doubt that every pipe is different. Off to test some more!;):beer;

I also reshaped mine today with the heat gun, left the foil in place and had it warn enough in minutes to push it in. about 1/2 of clearance now.

easy fix
