Hit a tree so hard he lost his helmet... a friend found him shortly thereafter. :face-icon-small-sad

Really sad situation and prayers for him, the family and friends. Helicopter landed above the lake and airlifted him out... Harborview according to the friends.

thoughts and prayers to the rider, his family and friends..that really sucks to hear....

Heard it was a broken leg. Lucky it was a clear day and helicopter got in before dark. He was loaded up and on his way at 4:00 PM.......Hoping for the best for sure......

When his buddy found him he was not breathing... both shoulders hit trees and literally peeled bark :face-icon-small-sad

As soon as he was removed from the tree he amazingly started breathing :face-icon-small-sho I really hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

I'm not sure if this is the case here or not, but it reminds me that a helmet is nearly worthless unless fully strappped on. Can sometimes do more damage than not having one on at all. It always amazes me when watching sledding films, how many guys do a nasty chute pull through the rocks, just to pull their loose helmet off. Seen it alot in person too. "Strap It On"

Prayers to those involved. Hope everything turns out OK. Sad.

From the Yakima Herald:

ROSLYN, Wash. -- A 58-year-old man is in serious condition at a Seattle hospital today after slamming a snowmobile into a tree near Salmon La Sac Sno-Park in Kittitas County on Saturday.

A rescue crew found Patrick Kirk, of Covington, Wash., suffering from severe injuries in a remote area Gallagher Lake just northeast of the park, which is about 18 miles north of the Cle Elum-Roslyn area, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.

Kirk was descending a steep mountainside at high speed when he hit the tree, deputies said.

Deputies said he had lost consciousness and stopped breathing for a short time after the accident.

He was airlifted to Kittitas County Hospital and transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was in serious condition, a nursing supervisor said this afternoon.

Deputies described Kirk as an experienced rider who was wearing a helmet and protective gear, but said it’s not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident

Thanks...

It was my father that was injured. He's in Harborview ICU Trama. Has collapsed lung, lacerated spleen, several broken ribs and 2 broken vertabrae in his back. Needless to say, thank you Kittatas County Search and Rescue. He's a tough old fart, that will pull through. Thanks again.

Elise

Prayers for your Dad & your family...

Thoughts of Pat from all of us!
So scary to hear the first hand report from Paul, like others have said it was a good thing the chopper could land in the good weather and get him to the hospital so quickly.
Hope for a speedy recovery!

Gallagher Rescue

Forum Members and Elise.

We hope Patrick makes a quick recovery and is back on the snow soon.

We were lucky Saturday with good weather and King County having their chopper ready to fly for us. Air assets are very limited these days.

However, remember that the mountains and the weather don't allways allow us to fly for injured riders and get them out a quickly as Patrick got out.

All of you as riders need to remember to be as ready as possible to help yourself, your riding companions and anyone else out recreating in the back country, sometimes help is hours away ,weather and snow conditions can really throw a wrench into things during a search & rescue mission.

Carry good first aid supplies and know how to use them, having some type of thermal wrap for an injured person is very important hypothermia can be a real issue if someone has to lay in the snow for several hours before help arrives.

I hope all of you have a safe winter with lots of good rides.

Search and Rescue Coordinator
