sled necks 11, cost me 40 bones

Sounds like some of you need to branch out on your title selection :D

Evolution Trailer

Tom...you read my mind!

Here's a little taste of some more crappy 'basement' editing and music selection from someone who has been working in broadcast television for 23 years and likes to cut a low-budget little sled vid in his spare time. :)

LOL! btw...tom...GREAT job on shooting & editing this season bud. you 509 guys should be proud. and also...every single year, the slednecks guys do an awesome job putting a film together. i crack up at how hyper-critical everyone is towards these guys (clayton, chris, jason) when they are out pushing it harder and crafting very good films that help advance our sport every season. rock on guys.

Evolution Trailer

well, some of us needs to branch out... and some, like me, buy basically every vid known to sledman soo..... ;)

btw, i can't remember if i ordered a vid from you Tom so if you could check and let me know i'd be happy cause the trailer for Evolution was SICK..
(althou im not a big fan of vertical and first ascent) yeah, i buy em all ;):D

and, i even made my own totally cool film this year too...
ain't that right jlowe? ;)

jeff, the sldnx crew DOES a good job promoting the sport BUT when they made 10, which is TOTALLY awesome in every way, they raised the bar for themselves and couldn't come near this season.. in my opinion...

what no stickers w/ the movie.

yep!! just watched Evolution, and i give it a 9.3 out of 10.

Sorry boondockers, you just got moved to 2nd. But imo, these are two are really #1, just sharing the trophy.

soundtrack, is mellow and all-age friendly!! just leave in the dvd, and let it roll.....................................insert rep here!!!

braaap

ps. awesome price $23 at dealer!! hat's off to you 509!

I was not trying to start anything or insult anyone or even leave the good films out.

jlowe7.... I fully get your point but that clip is a great example of talented riders and just OK editing. Obviously from a youtube clip it's hard to tell if it was filmed on real film or video which on a big screen changes the feel in itself. But things like keeping the rider centered in frame, using a tripod or steady cam instead of shaky hand helds, the pan speeds etc. all make up a good edit. Watch it again a few times and pick some things out. Imagine how cool some of those chute climbs in movies would be, or the jump sequences if they used a cable cam. Perfect example Check out the new Mastercraft x-star boats promotional videos on their website done in florida last summer... longest cable cam shots ever on film (any film)and most would swear it was a super low level heli shot. Alex Fostveld (from Freeride Entertainment but working on his own) did that one. The NFL looks better than CFL on TV for a reason and the CDN guys have been in TV for years to. Again not trashing anyone, I'm just saying cool is not always pro and there is always room to improve.

And I agree, 509 does look great, I'll be buying it.

Cheers

One thing you have to consider is accessibility. Take a mountain bike film for example. They can truck thousand of pounds of camera gear to many film locations via access roads. Try that on a sled....not happening. Half the time a hopped up snowmobile barely accesses many of these locations, let alone any significant amount of gear. So what are the options? Heli, sure, the with the rate distributors pay for sled films, that'll burn through your budget REAL quick.

So in my opinion there is definitely huge room for improvement across the industry, but we face many hurdles that make it that much more difficult.

i think you sort of missed my point but that's ok. :) just be careful to make generalizations on an entire film segment and only use one or two titles as the barometer by which to base your judgement that all snowmobile films are the same.

of course stedi-cams, cable-cams, unlimited heli time, 35mm film and 500K production budgets would help make better sled films. they take this little thing called 'money' to make them happen. ;) the segment is not pushing enough vids for companies to get behind even a few films like matchstick, or TGR gets in ski flicks. so what you're left with is 'true' sports film indy guys funding the production of these films out of their own pockets. you are 100% right...a lot of the guys hacking these sled films out are NOT editors, or producers or have any kind of film or production background...but more power to them for rippin' it and doing their best to advance to sport through movies.

there are a handful of snowmobile movies out...specifically this year...where the filmcraft of putting the movie together has improved dramatically. i have conversations offline with some of these guys and almost every single one of them has begun to understand the importance of the filmmaking part of doing this. not just pointing a camera at some guys on the hill and cutting it to some music. you are still going to have guys coming in each year with 'their first film' and its gonna look rough but the sled film segment (overall) is evolving as fast and good as it can without the big-buck infusion of major sponsor dollars...which trust me...if and when that day comes...will bring its own NEW set of problems. good discussion nonetheless...and good points you've brought up.

The 509 Evolution trailer looked good, I might buy that one, I liked the music. The head banger crap in most of the other ones gives me a headache.

I all time favorite is still Redneck Fury, that was a funny sucker.

Jlowe,

Good points. This all started with TS and a bunch of guys have pointed out some great films here since. We did film with 500K + budgets but I can honestly tell you a half mil in the film industry does not go to far... you have get creative and there are not too many in the action sports arena getting rich. I can tell you I was jealous of the amount of heli time I saw in thunderstruck. So unless he is one super rich guy I still think his sponsors are stepping up somewhere.

My personal favorites are the Xtreme Velocity Sled Heads by Thomas Opre. The music is fresh, the cinematography is fantastic, and yes, I have to argee with everyone on this thread that Slednecks is getting stale. No offence to Jason Moriarty, but it really hasn't been the same with out Jay Quinlan. That and the soundtracks are getting kinda lame. It was cool the first couple time around seeing huge air and insane stunts. But the big draw for me is seeing guys like Dan Davidoff , Brad Story, or Trennis Baer doing huge climbs on stuff that I never thought possible. Turbo or not, this is the s h y t e . I admire these guys for what they do and the size of Rocks it takes to do it.

evolution of the mountain rider

It seems that there are two genres in the sled film industry, big climbing and big air. No disrespect to the guys doing the extreme of either but I hope to see young riders take notice and really push themselves to be the best in both worlds. I think everyone has seen the gardiners, kyles, and alfords jump everything known to man and short of seeing story or davidoff climb everest on a turbo I think we seen pretty much everyhting there. what we haven't seen is the chute guys learn to launch there sled off the chute they just climbed, imagine that. Davidoff turnout just near the top of giant chute and side hillig across to one of the many available cliffs and droping 150' off it. Can't really imagine it but it is only a matter of time before some of the young riders figure out that to bring something new to the table they will have to learn to be that guy. Watching Chris Burandt is the closest thing today I think and everyone will agree there is just not enough footage of him out their. With the stock sleds getting so capable, you don't need 40g to be the big chute climber anymore. Just need the skills and a large sack!
