skid removal help

Im trying to remove my skid (2012 SBA) and im stuck

I've got the track loose

I've got one bolt out of the front (right side) and one out of the back (left side) once i go to the other side and try to take the others out it just spins in both cases impact or by hand....note i did spin the other side first by hand and not impact

I see theres a bearing in there to keep the bolts from backing out when riding...

I end up putting a 2/12" bolt with a nut and washer in there run it all the way in while holding the other side and snug it in good... then back it out a half turn and lock the nut good and tight against the tunnel

goto the other side and start to loosen the other bolt while holding the one thats locked against the tunnel it never pulls out and just starts loosening my bolt thats locked against the tunnel... im using hand tools and tried a makita 18v impact with no success

Ive also tried it with running the bolt all the way in tight and then locking the nut on the tunnel and then trying to loosen from there and i get the same results.

I havn't tried this trick with the back where i'm having the same issue but...

what am i missing here?

so do the same thing im doing now with the bolt and lock it agianst the tunnel just up the power?...ive got a 1/2" air impact at work i could probly borrow this weekend

I do the skid on my PRO without using impact. I back one side out almost all the way, then hit the other side. Don't pull them all the way out until both sides are pretty much completely loose and then finish them off and you're good.

This doesnt work for me.... or at-least not anymore after the first time I did it, I backed the one all the way out and then went on the other side and started loosening it with a ratchet until i realzied it was just spinning. Then did the same thing on the back because im super smart like that.:smokin:..lol

Learning the hard way

Weird...thats how Ryan and i do it...just a ratchet and an open end...

You need to break the loctite loose on the "stuck" bolt. All I have is hand tools at home and generally, one side will loosen and come out. Then, I screw it back in until it is tight. Then I go to the other side and break loose that bolt and either back it out all the way or just until a few threads are left. Back to the other side and the pre-loosened bolt usually breaks free and sometimes I have to use a screwdriver as a wedge between the aluminum shafty thing and the tunnel. This keeps the shaft from turning while spinnng out the bolt. Sometimes I use a needle nose Vise-Grips to grab the aluminum shaft on bolts with TFM loctite.

For really, really stubborn bolt, heat application through a tube that is just larger than the head of the bolt will soften up the loctite so it can be removed.

wow ok so i didnt have an air impact gun at work just a plug in electric one rated at 330 ft lbs max that still doesn't work
there's one i can rent thats 425 max.... air impact guess ill go that route and grab a pipe that will just fit over the bolt head to heat it just in case to

so your saying just a pipe say about 4 inches long or so and heat right on top of the bolt head thats stuck? theres nothing inside that's going to melt or anything plastic? (besides locktite)

PITA

I got the front out by putting the bolt that came out back in tight and then heating the other side and the 1/2 impact came right out

Now im on the back I've tried putting the bolt that came out back in tight and then heating the other side and the 1/2 impact

I've tried a 2 1/2" bolt with a lock nut and washer threaded it in all the way then backed out 1/2 a turn then locked the nut to the bracket then heated the other side and hit it with the 1/2" air impact I've done this twice and it will just start to tweak and push out on the tunnel before it breaks loose...WTF

Im at the point where im about to ditch the map gas torch run to work grab oxy acetylene and heat that mother :censored: till its glowing red hot

What a PITA

Edit...its came out about 1/4" and stuck again even with heating it...i put a ratchet strap to keep the tunnel from flexing out it just breaks the lock nut loose now
I'm goin to get drunk now

I've gone as far as removing the grease zerk and drilling a small hole (not all the way through, just a dimple) in the axle with an angle drill. I then just put a small punch in the hole so the axle won't turn while removing the bolt.

i dont know if your doing this with the sled on its side or hanging but if you got it hanging try putting a little pressure up on the skid under the front of the track with a floor jack it helps the opposite bolt from spinning sometimes seemed to work for me the first time i took my skid out on my sba
