Skid Glide Plate

Looking into making a skid plate for my bike. Had considered aluminum, but seeing what is on some other bikes has me thinking of a composite type, using UHMW.

I would install as far back as possible without interfering with the track, and as far up the front as needed, probably not much since I have a 2 stroke pipe there anyways. Width might be slightly wider than rails up front to help with snow deflection from motor.

Has anyone made one of these using this material? I know people out there have, as I heard about it in another thread. But it was pretty old. Curious what thickness you chose, what works well for impact resistance yet is easy to bend into place.
I was thinking 3/8" but had considered much thicker even, up to 5/8" initially.

Appreciate any input if people have it that have worked with materials like this. Not sure what I would mount to underneath, but I have some old skid plate rail hooks that should work for up front, and run the bolts through the plastic.

checkout what Reagan Sieg runs.

you can see it in the first few minutes of this video. he has shaped his skid plate so it breaks snow around his feet a little more. good idea i think. i doubt it's thicker than 5/16th's, but who knows?

Yeah exactly like that. You are right, looks fairly thin, but hard to tell.
Brock has similar here, https://youtu.be/vo4OmrtczHE?t=10s
He just has them zip tied on it looks like, which would be the easiest. Looks about like 1/4" or possibly 3/8".

Much advantage to using the ice skating stuff? Does it bend with a heat gun?

HDPE works good it is typically black in color and can be found at any plastics store.

Thanks, do you have a recommended thickness?
I found they are claiming that HDPE is moldable with heat, at 295 degrees. I didn't see values for UHMW, but it's working temp upper range is 20 deg higher. Curious if it can be molded enough to make the bend along frame rails. Also curious if hdpe will warp from being so close to the pipe.

Yes did mine in 1/4 inch UHMW with teflon use a heat gun take your time to get it heated all the way through ( that is the hard part) I pre bend it on the bench than while still hot installed it on the bike for perfect shape Using clamps to get it close to drill the upper holes then bolt it down heat it up one more time done evenly. Do not get to close as it will yellow if you get it to hot. When I remove it it still springs back a bit, but close enough that I can install it by hand now without much force needed.

I have made many shroud kits for different bikes. I use 1\4" uhmw for skid plate and much thinner for sides. Ck out www.garysengine.com for some pics.

Those look really good, and well covered.

1/4" it is, seems like that is the common verdict among posters. What are you using to secure it to the frame? I would like to use something that doesn't add friction, flat head bolts, whatever they are called, but what to use on the frame side?

I'll probably order a piece up here shortly. Not sure if I will encase the sides yet, would be tricky with my machine I think.

500 doesnt care about snow on the motor. Balls deep i see 90F all day long. Runs great. T stat isnt needed either in the deep. Just for the trail up with more cooling such as a cooler.

I see. Yes i run carb heat. M5 and I made our own flanges. Wasnt a fan of the Avid stuff being square and fitting poorly in our frames. I have my flange heated more or less all the time. I have two valves but they never really get touched.

That's right I saw that in your thread. Curious how you made it. Would like similar.

Just lathed it out of two pieces of round stock on M5's little lathe. He then tig welded it and i turned it a little more. Turned out sweet and zero ice issues ! And it cost 10 bucks LOL
