Silverthorne riding.

Hello snowest. Long time no post. With the drought in California I have not been able to put many miles on the sled since 2010/2011. So far we are having a good year. Last Tuesday was the best day in three years and we are getting a foot as I type. Stoked.

What are some good areas to ride in and around Silverthorne? We are planning on coming out for the PBR pond hockey championships in February and are dragging the sleds. The plan, depending on snow, is to stop in the Ruby's in NV to do some sled-skiing for a day or two, then off to Utah for some skiing or sledding, and off to Colorado. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some good areas in the area?

Thanks in advance. Hope you all have a good season!

Yup, let the snow guide you. Not sure the Rubies will be the place this year?

Anyways, Vail Pass is the most obvious choice for close to Silverthorne, and as luck would have it happens to have a designated area for sled skiing. What that means is that there's an area the sleds are supposed to not track up, but can do laps with the sleds. Great riding area, with great snow. Literally great riding right from the 10.000ft+ parking lot.

Montezuma, Spring Creek, and few others I can't think of that are an hour or less from Silverthorne. Montezuma has some big line skiing.

If it's on in Colorado at the time, don't know if I'd bother stopping on the way. Unless it was to hit stuff that's only good in a Nino year like Brianshead, or Flagstaff.

Really is some good stuff around Silverthorne, just lots of people to go along with it.

Are you sure it is still open to sleds up around Montezuma? I thought I read about them closing much of that area to sleds a few years back.

Vail Pass is your best bet though. Skiing, sledding and sled skiing all from the same easy access parking lot. Get there early, bring cash for parking. This storm today should really improve the conditions!

They may have squeezed out a bunch of Zuma, but far as I know, can still ride some there.

We lost about 30 or 40 percent of the riding in montezuma a few years back but its still pretty good. You can't ride Peru creek drainage, or the northern side of St Johns valley. You still have the south side of St Johns, webster pass area, and Deer creek. Parking is another thing all together up there. But hell, even vail pass doesn't have enough parking anymore.

I'd recommend Vail Pass. It's a fee area, $6 a day or so. But has some great riding and a lot of options. Plenty of space where you only ride around other people if you want to.
