It's the piston becoming a "looser fit' as it "rattles" around in the cylinder. Cast pistons do not have the strength of a forged piston. Look at stock clearances of the piston to wall clearance and then take the same motor and measure the clearances of one with 1000 miles. People are seeing .009 and greater clearances with only 1000 miles. These engines are starting out at .005-.006 new. So whats happening? Piston is "deforming." In the performance world, vehicles/cars, you don't generally run a cast piston because is not able to hold up to the forces the motor is making. I am surprised that as the manufactures are able to make more and more HP out of the sleds, they have not upgraded to a better piston. IMO These are high performance "high tech" engines with "low tech" pistons, which is the weak link. IMO
Yes and no.
Been reading about engines, kits, pistons, porting, tuning and what not on this site (among other sources) for 12 years+ now. Now piston brand has gotten as much flak as Wiseco, just statistical facts here.
Personally, i dont know where the trick is. I do believe the guys who post stories w/ pics of wrecked motors and bad pistons, but I also believe some guys who have run wisecos for decades without anymore problems than "normal" in the performance world.
Heard all kinds of stories/theories about why they fail and how to make them last, don't have a clue how to get a straight answer in the end.
Great pistons or crap??
They still have pistons for everything under the sun, so business must be good, no?? And this cant be boosted by 4-stroke sales since no sane vendor would keep a negative busienss going for decades. They would quit the sled part of their business.
Brake in procedure and proper warm-up is the repeat track on wisecos living.
Yet, Indydan here is referred to as something of a problemsolver but he wont touch wisecos with a long stick??
"And the correct verdict for Wiseco pistons in snowmobiles is..."
