Shovel on an ABS Bag??

I just picked up a 15L ABS bag and was wondering how everybody mounted their shovel on the outside of it. I currently have it shoved inside of the bag and was wondering what everybody else was doing with their shovels with one of these bags. I know the smaller ABS bags have the mount on the outside, but was looking for ideas. I also have to put my probe, some gloves, and some tools on the inside and just wanted to see if I could make more room by moving it to the outside. Any suggestions or pictures would be great! Thanks in advance!

If you've got an ABS bag put a shovel on your sled. Say your stuck on a hill, take your pack off and a slide is set off when your removing your shovel from your pack, all the sudden your $1300 ABS bag is worhtless since your busy digging the shovel out, and not wearing it.

chapman... then what happens when you buddies and you get in a slide.. your sled gets burried with your shovel and your buddies burried.. how to you get to them??

Good Debate

This will be a good debate: I'll pop some popcorn...

I keep mine on the pack, but would love to keep it on the sled, because the pack is already heavy and kills my shoulders by the end of the day. The weight loss of the shovel would certainly help...

Here's mine:

Like many of you, I also carry one on my sled and in my pack. My original question was regarding how to mount the one on my new pack since I hadn't quite figured it out. The above picture clarified how to do it, so thanks! I hope most people are carrying two shovels, because as said, hard to use the ABS when it is on the ground when the slide happens. An even better solution to all of this is to never get stuck;)

If you don't want the handle in the shovel head being so high, on either side of the pack you can run the handle down along the side of shovel face and the small end fits nice in either of the 2 tabs near the bottom of the pack. You can see one of them in the pic. When you buclke the top strap across it holds them both firmly and they don't move around or rattle. Works great and the handle rides way lower and out of the way.

vario or escape

i had an escape 30lt and i had it mounted on the out side, i think the shovel was bca shovel, the shaft of the shovel slides down through the blade, the alu shovel blade is a little bit smaller that my sos, worked great, the top of the handle was even with the top of the pack, i now have a vario with the 15lt and the 22lt, i did a quick mod to the bottem strap of the bag and i just flip the shovel up and it fits on the out side of the pack, if you pm me and email i know if have pics of the 30 lt i can take a pic of the 15lt as well. i used about 6in of webbing and a large pop rivet to put a loop on the bottem strap. i fit the t handle in and flip the shovel up on to the pack and use the top strap to hold the blade in, when its flipped up the handle locks in place. work great. i put it on the out side when i know i will be needing it, if im just boondocking around i put it inside. let me know i can email you the pics i just dont know how to post them
good luck

With an abs pack, have a shovel in the pack and also on the sled. Make sure the shovel handle is not positioned at the base of your skull.

Deploy 3

I went through this exercise. As stated above, you don't want to take the pack off to dig out. I carry two shovels, one on the sled and one in the pack. Pack Shovel: I use a Black Diamond Deploy 3, which fits nicely inside the ABS 15. It is aluminum. The handle telescopes into the blade. This is my backup shovel, in case I am separated from my sled. Sled Shovel: A more typical (bigger) shovel that fits my Boss shovel pouch. Also aluminum.

On another note. I would be hesitant to mount the shovel on the outside of the ABS15. Two reasons; 1.) it is difficult to securely/reliably mount on the outside. 2.) risk of the shovel blade messing with the bag deployment.

JMHO...Hope this helps...

Here's mine. I cut holes in the blade of the shovel to make sure it's secure and out of the way of the ABS bags when they deploy. Your shovel needs to be super secure and have NO SHARP edges on it. Otherwise, your $1000 bag may fail due to a $50 shovel. Mine has been test fired twice to make sure the bags are "safe".
