Shotgun Pellet Ballistics Info Needed - Legal Issue (Dog Shot)

Glad ur dog is OK....just wondering have u figured out if he was in fact shot on ur property?

Sounds like you have one strong pup there!! That's great. I am glad he's doing well.

My questions is, can a single shot from a shotgun have such a wide difference in penetrating power? Or (as I suspect) was he shot twice. I have the bb's they could get out. They compare with a 20 ga that I opened up. Do shotgun shells from a .410, .20 ga. & .12 ga all use the same size shot, just different amount?

First, very sorry to hear of this!!! never any fun...when you confronted the shooter what was their reaction?

Question 1- Yes can by huge variance...not all shot has the same energy transfer, nor the same flight characteristics (think wind drag)

Question 2- shot shells can use all the same...most common is shot 4,5,6, 7.5, 8...used in all 10, 12, 16, 20, and .410 gauge...

had two dogs attack a horse I was riding one time...the horse was amazing, just trotted off...and when we were coming back I jumped off and waited for the dogs to get within 5 feet of me..the horse backed a little, and I double tapped 1 foot in front of the lead dog...he spun so fast you would have thought he was a reining horse!!! those dogs never came out again, and the owner tried to give me an earful, till I had the neighbor (sheriff) come over while she was screaming at me...and ask If I wanted him to take the dogs to be destroyed...she then turned her rage toward him (in uniform) and he suggested it was my decision, and that she should be greatful, as I had every right to kill the dogs, and still do...

I showed her the blood still coming down from my geldings ankles, and being a tree hugger, she cried for my horse...only to tell me that she was appalled that I put the horse in that position...

the Sheriff and I started laughing...and explained that her dogs were the issue, and they were now up for capital punishment as a result...

was quite the interesting exchange...

GLAD he's OK. GLAD nobody is dead. GLAD no dogs are dead.

GLAD you know me well enough that I can say this...but Uhhh Mark....THAT is a funny ****in pic.

BTW, berries can take ALOT of abuse before they are rendered inoperable.
Case in point my well documented attemt at shortstop to get a glove on a bullet of a one-hopper to the boys back in '99. 3 kids and 10 years later (ver easily I might add) and things are fine. They are tough little soldiers. You need not be worried there. HAHA. Carry on......

Plus, you only need one in working condition to get the job done. Back when we were little kids, one of my buddies was sitting on concrete and throwing a hammer into the air. He missed catching it on one attempt and it pulverized one of his nads. The doc said he could still have kids with only one working.

Sorry to hear about your dog Slim. Hope he makes a full recovery.

If this guy is destitute and out of a job, he'll probably be moving soon.

I don't agree with shooting any dog but pit breeds and rotties are pretty scary animals to some. It may not be fair to all dogs and to some responsible owners but it's out there just the same. I guess the main question, and I don't want to sound preachy, is where was your dog when he took the shot and where was his master?? I used to let my dog run around our area when we built our house. As the neighborhood built up and more people came, I had to limit the run on the dog.

Again, no dog should ever take a shot and shooting a dog unless he's clamping down on you is chicken $hit.

I'm glad that Jackson is OK. He looks like a great example of a wonderful, albeit a misunderstood breed.

As a kid I had my Malamute Neika shot after she & her sister climbed over a 6' fence during a thunder storm (they did not like thunderstorms) so I know the pain & anger a person can feel. Long & sad story so I will not get into it here but Best of luck to you & Jack!

sorry to hear

Slim

There is such a thing as a duplex or even a tri-plex load they make with different sized pellets. I have used them for turkey loads and some upland game.

None the less hope your hound gets well soon.

See you in about 4 more months.

Slim - sorry to hear about Jackson, but I am so glad to hear that he is home with you and Jo!! No words of wisdom about the shooting tho......

had 3 healers chase my kids at the grandparents house, scared the chit outta everyone.

My two kids were up there staying the night and playing out front in the yard, the neighbors dogs musta heard them or something and came charging over the hill. My kids arn't scared of dogs at all but those 3 dogs sent em running for grandpa screaming at the top of their lungs, scared the hell outta grandpa, who thought they were hurt bad as he could hear my girl screaming over his 70hp tractor and 5 foot mower deck running in the back yard, he was mowing bushes by the river when my girl ran to him with 3 healers in pursuit. "sounded like a sireeen" he says. He jumped off the tractor and yelled the dogs fled.

Grandpa said they were all bristled up and aggresive, girls screaming prolly excited them even more but you can't blame a 7yr old girl at all.

I could only imagine what the outcome woulda been had they harmed those kids.

There are other factors not mentioned here Slim. It is possible to choke a shotgun down to very tight patterns. Distance is somewhat determined by the amount of penetration. Close range would have blown the leg clean off. Also consider the surface that the dog was standing on when shot, concrete or asphalt would allow the pellets to bounce thus reducing the spread of the pattern to half the normal size.

Glad the dogs going to make it though.

And I'm not saying this to defent the azzhat that shot him, for those that might think that way.

You need an untraceable gun? This is BS! I talked to Judy, she told me about it, and, I am pissed! There is no way Jack would hurt anyone without
good cause so I know this loser needs his azz kicked and I will be more than
happy to do it bro!
Especially after the rest of what you and Jo have gone through......

Where does this douche live from You? I can make a call and have his eviction hastened a little........

6 words of wisdom........
keep
your
dogs
in
your
yard.

Technically, you are right.
But,
I'm lucky to live in a developement where everyone is pretty laid back.
When we walk the mongrel, she runs through everyone's yard trying to scare
a bird up from their bushes, and to stop & sniff their dogs (their way of saying "Hi").
She's really good about not pooping in others yards.
Neighbors dogs run through our yard too. If they crap, no big deal, it hurts nothing.

Anyway, my point is.....You don't want my dog in your yard? OK, that's fine.
But keep your booger eatin' kids outa my yard then too. If I catch them stealing
apples they are apt to come home with buckshot in their rear ends!

Of course I'm kidding, but you do get my point, right?

my dads friend had a rottweiler and he was a mean mother ****er. if i was older then i would of shot him myself. tuff dogs for duck hunting in the cold though

Thanx for the reply's, it helps a bunch to determine "intent" & "malice" as I had expected.

The sherrif asked If I want to press charges, I have declined due to the shooters destitution & young family.

I count our good fortune on being able to afford & provide the care Jackson needed, and having the great result of Jackson walking.
