Shopping for a new Helmet

I'll put in a super positive review for the new FLY F2 Carbon shown here. I have a totally messed up neck from multiple crashes and surgeries so I need a light, comfortable, quality lid that fits correctly. I found the fit and feel to be outstanding for my bean. The over all seal to the Scott Xi goggles was perfect as well as pretty well balanced for wind blockage. I don't wear a head gasket so I need a lower face protector that will allow breathing without fogging your goggles but block enough wind and snow so that I don't have to be covered up under my helmet. Found this lid to be ideal in that regard.

Looks good, held up well to the riggers of a 45 plus mtn ride season, all inner componants still in excellent shape, and basically good to go another round.

Highly recommend this product that is available through your dealer from WPS.

I went out a few months ago to buy a new helmet I tried on so many it was ridiculous. Arai fit really well but $600 for a helmet was a little rich for my blood. I am a sweater the helmet need's to ventilate pretty well for me. I tried on Fox, Troy lee, Fly, Shoei, Arai, Scorpion, HJC, Klim, Fulmer, Rockhard, Gmax, I figured this much for the Dollar HJC fit pretty well. I wanted quality and for once I spent my money on something that fit the best for buck. I bought a Shoei it and Arai almost fit exactly the same then it was down to spending the extra 100 for the Arai. I figured get what fit's the best don't worry about price you only have one head. Take the high end of your budget and your low end go to the cycle shop and try em all on make sure you have their so called experts help you with the proper fit. They told me 95% of the people buy them to big which was my problem. Then go home and find the best price and go back and see if they will match it Sun Powersports in Denver matched and beat the price by $10 bucks. Which was worth the research and beat the web price by a few bucks with shipping once tax was figured.

HJC Carbon

I got one this year and it has worked really well. Very light and fits well. I got mine from Motorcycle Superstore for 250. Cheapest price I could find at the time for a Carbon Fiber helmet.

Ya know, I have been thinking about getting a new helmet also. Tonight I was doing some browsing, I like the 509 helmet, currently have HJC. I also like the Klim helmet. While I was at extreme supply I was looking at AFX helmets, saw a couple I liked, then I noticed something. The AFX FX-17 helmet, looks to be the SAME helmet as the 509! Difference? Graphics, and price, weight, 3.22 for the 509, 3.42 for the afx. You can get one of the afx helmets for $85. Flat black for $75. Front venting all looks to be the same, as does the rear. Now, I dunno, maybe there is more to this coincidence. I love the sledding graphic theme on the 509 helmet, but not for an extra 100 bucks.

Just some food for thought.

Very interesting.....:beer;

I bought an AFX-FX-17 last fall for this season and I love it... venting is great and I like the look of it too.... sizing is a lil smaller than I thought it would be, but otherwise I really like it. Bought it on sale from Dennis Kirk for $50... after riding with it for most of the season I saw they had another sale on them about a month ago so I picked up another one to have for quadding in the summer time... went with the XXL and it fits awesome. Definitely nice helmets IMO and priced affordable too!:D

how come helmets are itchy...or is it just mine..?...its a zox...maybe its recycled material..lol..anyone else with helmet itch..??..any cures besides crab cures..??

There are plenty of good helmets out there around $150 retail. Often much much lower than that on closeout. The HJC is a good quality helmet without breaking the bank. One Industries Kombat helmets are also popular and I think they would probably fit you better. Scorpion has a nice helmet with cool adjustable cheek pads by way of an air pump. Fox has the V1 and V2 helmets that are affordable. Stop on down so I can help you out.

No itchy head here...my nads do itch from time to time but I don't think that counts.

I am currently running the FLY Formula MX which is a great helmet and probably one of the lightest out there..... However with a price tag around $400 I am guessing that is a little more then you want to spend.

For the money and what you get HJC is probably the best out there. They are the largest helmet builder in the world and they build something like 65% of the worlds helmets. The new CLX-6 is a really sick helmet and it is like $139.99 retail so I am sure you can find it cheaper.

As for the 509 helmets I really don't see what everyone is bragging about other then the fact they look cool. It is not even a Snell approved helmet and it is almost $200 bucks. If i had to guess the 509 looks like a HJC CS-MX but don't quote me on that one. To each there own but it the features for the money just does not add up for me.

Like Monte said above go to Bob's Cycle and talk to him!! You will be well taken care of as he is very knowledgeable and just a down right awesome guy!!!!!

Monte I will be stopping in to shop soon. Not sure when, but soon I hope. Gotta figure out when I can either leave the troop behind or pack them all along.

= AFX FX-17

As i've posted before the shell we used on our 509 Evolution helmet is a shell design owned by the manufacturing facility. As is common practice in helmet industry shells are commonly shared by various helmet brands (fyi, AFX is NOT the manufacturer). This particular shell is used by about half dozen different brands. I haven't personally held a FX-17, so I don't know what other materials they use (liner for example). So to say one helmet is identical to another because they share a shell isn't necessarily true. There is a lot more than goes into a helmet than just the shape of the shell.

And for those who think a SNELL sticker automatically means a better/safer helmet, here's a great read for you. Long read but very educational.

Doubly Good !!!

Let me clarify one thing. I'm not at all saying SNELL's aren't safe helmets, because they most certainly are. Simply pointing out DOT-only helmets are often equally and in some studies even safer than SNELL. That article is a great informative piece to help people come to their own conclusions. My own opinion, you can't go wrong with either a SNELL or a DOT, so long as it fits your head properly.
