Hey i was wanting to know how the riding is in the Shirley mountains....thinking about trying something new this year

Are they in WY? If your talking about Shirley Basin then be sure and bring some rocks to put in your pocket so you don't blow away.:face-icon-small-hap

There are mountains in Shirley Basin

Are you talking about the Medicine Bow National Forrest near Laramie Peak?

If so I don't think there is any riding around there, most of that area is all private land if I remember right.

The Shirley Mountains are to the West of Shirley Basin. Opposite Laramie Peak. I have never heard of anyone riding them.

I haven't either, at least not publicly. I think most of that land surrounding laramie peak and around esterbrook is private isnt it?

the snowest mag for places to ride listed the shirley mtns as a riding area with trails. don't know them but you could check with the town of rawlins. i think its BLM.

I'll check it out, but are you sure this isn't the Sierra Madres you're talking about?

I don't even remember seeing the Shirley mountains listed in the last "where to ride" mag ...

I could have missed it

I always thought those mountains were the Ferris mountains

That looks to me like it's the range that you see if you are at Pathfinder looking southwest, and you basically drive right by them on the way to rawlins .... there are also some sand dunes over in that area I've been meaning to check out in the summer.

Honestly though, if those are the same mountains I am thinking of, there wasn't much snow at all on them ...

That's looking at that mountain range from the northeast side of pathfinder ...

I dunno, every time I've driven by there in the last god only knows how many years it didnt look like there would be enough to ride, but hell, it's probably worth checking out. I know that isn't a very popular riding area as far as "non locals" are probably concerned ...

Bet if people started riding there it'd really piss "the locals" off, heh :face-icon-small-win

They would be to the Southeast of Pathfinder. The Ferris Mountains are to the Southwest of Pathfinder. On the west side of highway 487. The loop they are talking about is off of highway 77. I have been up there during hunting season and it just doesn't seem like a good sledding place. Lots of deep, deep, canyons and a lot of rocky areas. I am sure they get enough snow up there to sled the trails but I wouldn't venture off trail up there. It isn't a big place because the majority of the surrounding areas are private.

I am suprised as I am a local and this is the first I have heard of riding being advertised up there. I am sure you don't see many people up there.

But good to know.

How close to Seminoe would this be? Is this basically the same mountain range that you drive through if you go past Miracle Mile and by Kortes dam?

I am trying to get my bearing here ... I've tromped around Pathfinder and miracle mile quite a bit but not a lot around Seminoe and south of Miracle Mile too far I guess ....

No. The mountain range that is at the miracle mile is the Seminoe Mountains. You have Pathfinder to the north. Seminoe to the south. The Semino Mountains right in the middle. Then the Ferris Mountain range to the West and the Shirley Mountain Range to the West. The Ferris Mountains are pretty much straight north of Rawlins. The Shirley Mountain range is straight north of Hanna.

So now look on a map. The Wyoming Gazetteer shows them very well.
