Shimming needed with SLP MTX weights?

Are you guys that are running the MTX weights having to shim the spider? I know that the MTX weights tighten up the belt-to-sheave clearance. Heard the Axys clutches are coming from the factory with tighter clearances then the IQ/Pro did.

SLP says .010-.020 clearance. Most Polaris clutches come with .040-.050 clearance and I've seen some as high as .070. The MTX weights in my sled tighten up the clearance to be within SLP specs and fit perfect with no adjustment. I've used them in several Polaris without ever having to re-shim. But I've never been able to use the MTX weights in a Cat without re-shimming or grinding the heel.

Was told I need to as well and about to puchase the weights but torn if I need to shim it or not.

Told it will be to tight and will drag at idle.

I guess it is, thanks for making sure..... :face-icon-small-dis

Ask a stupid question? :face-icon-small-dis

Don't be getting your feeling hurt now.
Just poking fun.

We are very picky about belt-to-sheave clearance. Start a shift slipping, it will slip till the top of your shift. Too tight of clearance will results in belts wearing quickly and jerky engagement. Most of the aftermarket belts are also slightly wider as they try to compensate for the loose factory fitment.

So we have shimmed every one of them in the shop into spec.

Some may loosen their deflection and get the machine to idle without creeping but that does not necessarily mean it is correct. Consistent results depend on precision and diligence. My .02

I remember Indy Dan saying that he shims them to zero clearance, warms the sled up without the belt, and then puts the belt on and rides it right off the bat. The new belt wears around a thou or two and that's the clearance he ends up with. Is zero really the hot ticket? What are you guys setting em at?

I have both a 15' AXYS shorty and a 16" AXYS switch. With a brand new poo belt on the 15' the clearance was so wide wasn't even worth getting the feeler gauges out. Installing a new wider gates carbon belt on the stock 15' clutch ate up most of this and the clearance was about .008".

The 16' clutch on the switchback 800 was much better, stock poo belt was around .025". If I wanted to run the wider gates belt on the stock 16' clutch it would probably be too tight and need shimmed.
Just shows each clutch may be different and always best to measure.
