me and my buddy are looking to take a trip out west (from SD). this is our first trip so we dont really know what to expect. were looking at sheridan and was wondering how the riding is there?? do they have trees/mountains/deep powder? or would you consider some other place to take a trip? any advice is appreciated!! :yo:

No riding in Sheridan, when they do get snow, they plow the streets! Yes, the Horns are mountains and they have trees/snow and lots of big rocks! Just don't go blasting over the top of the hill, some of them don't have anything but air on the other side. I hear the riding is a little tamer on the south side above Buffalo (never rode there) but the north has something for everyone, just no long chutes and extremly rare for any type of avy.

I hope your kidding when you say avalanches are extremely rare in the big horns. Although I dont ride there much anymore two years ago I counted 8 avys in one day that were all naturally triggered with the last 24 hours. It don't take a big one to get burried and loose your life. Always be prepared for the worse.

For someone new going to the mountains telling them avys are extremely rare is the worst advice you could give. Have a merry christmas everyone.

Maybe I should have said and big avy's. Yes I've seen lots of slides and a few what I would call real avy's. It is always important to use good sense and try to avoid areas that put you in a bad spot if something did happen.

We usually stay at bear lodge and ride around there. You can find about anything you want there there are some trees and there is a lot of just plain good riding. We seem to always find some good powder. They have about any type of riding you would want from trails to the expert rider. We always have a good time. Theres bear lodge, arrowhead lodge, and elk view. all within a few miles of each other and are all good places to stay. were heading up there next weekend. Were from SD also so what most people think of a bad day of rideing up there is a good day to us since were used to riding on only a couple of inches of snow down here on the flats. Ive never seen a slide out there but have herd of them out there always pays to be a little careful.

I was going to say I have seen some wind loaded hills let go up there and seen it slide 5' deep or better EVERY YEAR I have rode this mountain. But you don't have to ride the steep hills to get any where, you can always go around
