Sentimental 04' 1M rebuild??? Need help

I have a great friend here in Layton that lost his older brother 4yrs ago while riding up in Farmington Canyon. I have been fortunate enough to get to know him and his family and have a profound level of appreciation for the man and the life he lives. His brothers 1M holds some significant sentimental value for him and his family but has been out of commission with a seized motor (from what I have been told) since shortly after that awful day. He as well as his family have expressed a strong desire to see this machine run again. I don't know an awful lot about Cat motors/clutching etc (can rebuild a doo though:p). Any help either mechanically or in the form of direction/deals on a replacement motor for this 04' would be greatly appreciated. I would like to have the machine running within a month.
Dan

I am no mechanic, but definitely willing to put in some man hours on it with ya. I could talk to Kelsey and see if there is anything he could help out with or give us great pricing.......:beer;

You really need to get into the motor and find out whats wrong. It could be a simple hone and piston or need a crank and case. They are about the easiest motor to work on ever and since they have been around a long time there are tons of spare parts around. Maybe Scott at RPM could help you. LOL.

Don't say "fix" and Scott at RPM in same sentence!

Now, see, that's the funny Madmax I know! I don't want Snottiepants to know about the rebuild. I am going to grab the sled from his brother and get into it. I would appreciate any assistance with the breakdown/rebuild. I know it holds a great deal of sentimental value for Scott. I do know it is material but for Scott it would mean a great deal to him.

Wrong place to post it then if you don't want snottie to find out. I would pull the post and we can communicate another way.........or hide it in another forum. Just a thought.

I too am no mechanic but I have rebuilt (several times) my polaris and am now just finishing up my M1000 top end. I would be more than happy put some man hours in and help out where needed. I live close too.

sounds good bud

I live here in Layton. We will have to get you out with our group one of these weeks as well.

Does the crank turn over by hand when you try to rotate the clutch? Or is it completely frozen? For starters pop the head off and what the cylinder look like?

Getting the sled in my hands this week

I hope to get the machine this week from Logan. I am open to venues/locations for the tear down. Again, not too worried about $ unless people are feeling generous and it gets costly. Again, not certain what is actually wrong with it at this point. Just Scottie's opinion, never had the cylinders off etc.

I have HOURS and HOURS under the hood, and over the seat of a 04 1m 900. Both carb and EFI. Let me know if I can help you out !!

Ouch on the crank. Last time I bought a cat 900 crank, which was about 5 years ago, it was over $1200. I'd look into a factory rebuilt crank.

That's also Snottie saying Crank

I am optomistic that it isn't as bad as he says. I would look for a used motor or even a machine and pull the motor and part out the sled

If it does end up being crank.....look into that Logan shop that rebuilt Ttabs crank.....seems like there pricing and ability to rebuild and true a crank was in the right ball park and took every case as a one off for price and work to be done.

Thanks

Do you have contact info etc? You are the "snowgoose" and "partsguy"!

I had 3 cranks built by lindsey machine is salt lake. it was 400 a piece and that was for polaris 800 broken in half cranks. They do great work and a fast.

I'll bet I can find an engine cheap somewhere. May be fun to put an 1160 in it! ;) Maybe even easier and cheaper to find?

Dan, I was a cat tech for 7 years.
My pa has lots of 900 parts laying around.
I start a new job tommorow, but I can help if we set up a time and place. I will donate my time, and most likely parts also.
While we are at it we can work on your kitty too.
Give me a call, get my # from sky or jed, or I will get yours and give you a call.
Mike

Hey man,
THanks for the offer. I expected no less from you. Funny how you can just meet someone and know that they would always have your back. Thanks man. Once I get the sled this week, I will reach out to all of you that have extended a helping hand. I do like the idea of the 1160...Woohoo!
