Selling a sled to someone in Canada

Anyone know what I need to provide someone from Canada to make the sale of a snowmobile legal for them?

IOW what do they need to get it across the boarder other than make sure Christian is not with them :face-icon-small-ton

helped a friend sell his boat through craigslist, to a guy in Canada.
neither of us could deliver it though... both having DUI's in our past records.
had to wait at the border in "no mans land" parking lot for the guy to come down and pick it up. US customs tried to charge a tax or some such bs when we came back through... until an old guy that had watched our little drama unfold waved us through.

Standard paperwork (bill of sale, transferred title) were fine for the sale. only real concern was crossing the border and the possible US tax on a sale made across the border.

wish I could tell you more but I'd do a little research or make a call to be sure.
good luck, eh.

Call and talk to Greg at Lifestyles Honda in Mt. Vernon as he does a bunch of sales north if the border. I know sled has to have ALL warranty updates to it. Some of the other things I'm not sure about cause in Wa. we don't have a actuall title. And I'm almost positive there some sort of paper work waiting period to get it across the border also. Hope this helps

I sold 2 sleds to some guys from Manitoba last spring.

You will need to fax copies of the title & bill of sale to the port of entry they will be going through 36 hours before the time they take the sled through.

Just call the port they will be traveling through and they will give you all the info.

my last sled went to canada over the summer. i needed to make a bill of sale, copy of current registration, copy of current insurance, and fax it all to the boarder. the title was not needed to cross. i had a loan on the sled and mailed the title to the guy after i paid off the loan. the guy provided me with the fax number of the boarder station he was going to cross. this all had to be done xx hours before he planned to cross. i want to say 72, but i dont remember. but as far as you being the seller.......just make sure the buyer has his ducks in a row.

I bought a sled in the states and brought it back home to Canada. It is the buyers responsibility to fax all documents to the border crossing. You may need to fax or scan and email the bill of sale and title to him. Tell the buyer to go here and do his homework. http://www.riv.ca/importingavehicle.aspx

Remember he is importing the sled. You are not exporting it. Everything you and the buyer need to know is on the website. The paperwork needs to be faxed to the border crossing a minimum of 72 hours prior to importing the sled. After I faxed the necessary documents I called them to confirmed that they received them. When I brought my sled back I was only at the border crossing for about 1/2 hour.

There are a few other steps the buyer will need to do when he gets it back to Canada but that is also on the website.

And since you are in Washington, you will not have a title for your sled. So, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Origin from the manufacturer. I sold a Polaris to a guy in Canada 2 years ago and I had to get the CofO through my dealer. Then as the other guys have stated you need to send the C of O, a copy of a Bill of Sale and a copy of the registration to the border crossing agents.
Your kind of puting the cart in front of the horse by filling out a complete bill of sale before the transaction takes place, but that's what they require.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the info!

Seems like the buyer needs to get a plan and let me know what I need to provide him. And the registration just expired on October 1st so I will likely need to renew the registration myself to get the sale done.

Canada

In addition you will have to have the MFR get your a certificate that shows all warranty updates have been done. The dealer can supply this info. The buyer taking it into Canada also has to pay a fee of $175 to be so lucky and to put up with all this BS! Our prices must be cheap for them to have any motivation to do all these transactions!

Make sure you work out payments too i know guys have brought down bank drafts to you guys and they are basically checks to you or something so you would have to wait till it transfers? Something like that, our bank drafts the bank holds that money so it cant be spent till that draft is cashed here in canada
