Secondary Spring

I'm in the process of changing secondary spring on my 2003 MC 800EFI. Previous owner had it set for +1 from factory (1 stiffer than center). Should I put new spring back this way or go back to stock center position. Spring I removed is very weak compared to new.

I ride mostly 6000-9000ft and sled is stock with exception of power claw upgrade.

Also, any tricks to installing this? Having a hell of a time!

Thank you!

I would put the spring back where it was, unless you want to try a few different setups. As for tips, put the clutch on a roll of duct tape. That will keep the sheave from moving when you are trying to spin/compress the spring to put it back together.

If your replacing the Yellow/white Secondary spring you should really concider the minor price diff. CPC builds the best spring for this application IMOP. The Red/White CPC secondary spring is the Most used spring of any spring on the market. IMOP is will work better and is only $25-30+ shipping. Call Cutlers Performance in Utah they can set you up.:face-icon-small-win

Where you set them dictates how much up and backshift you get. I always start in the middle and give it more or less depending how it's working. Like rixster said sit it on a roll of duct tape and push down and twist, goes easy. The roll of tape will keep the bottom from twisting.

reverse cam experiment

on the reverse cam secondary clutch any spring position beyond the middle hole is ********

green cat secondary for $$ is hard to beat, other copy cats on the market for more $$$

"When you use the cat green ( or copy cat from ??) more than middle hole adjustment you loose upshift. So if you have heat issues or slipping issues, and think you need to get viscous tight on that spring............ you need to to lower gearing, clean and align clutch's and made adjustments to run a stiff spring with as little preload as possible. Less helix, loose stiff secondary spring. Cats problem with this clutch was stoc, k the next hole is about 15 degrees plus of rotation. Real easy to go from not enough spring pressure to toooo much and go right past where you need to run. Cheap answer is two more set of holes so you have 3-4 degrees of adjustment.

Easy to do, but a brain teaser to explain. Back in the day lots of aftermarket infinite adjustments spring hole gizzmos. A not so secret big secret the yamaha tuners like al brought to make a good cat secondary.

So in short......if you have to go tighter than middle, you have other problems. So send me plate and $50 and I'll drill the holes, or check old post for free.

green or pink spring

I went from a red white in the +1 hole from center and still didnt cure it, then went to a green and helped and then tried the pink spring with a 55 degree helix and man brought it to life. Im running a single pipe reeds and nos with a 162 mavrick track and was getting a lot of belt heat from not back shifting fast enough but just right now. might try that
