Second big powder day, another (boring) review

The setup: 9" fell last Sunday. About 12" fell Wednesday into Wednesday night. There was at least that 21" of powder on the ground, everywhere we rode and once again, dare I say, there was almost too much snow.

Again, the bikes were awesome. 2017 Beta 500 RR-S and a 2008 CRF450X, both with 2018 Camso DTS 129 kits. I had some trouble starting the bike as it was 10-F in the morning and even with the 0W-40 in both the motor and clutch, I now know it is not the oil rather the cold battery that has the bike trying, and trying, and trying to get the bike started but after a whole lot of tries, it eventually fires up and runs. I had even left the light/guages on and came out to a dead battery after lunch. Kicking the bike fired it back up but as I didn't get much charge in the bike I had to use the Weego JS12 back up pack that had it going no problem. Rode the bike around and the battery got topped back up.

The powder really is where it is at although, we did get to ride a newly groomed snowmobile trail and it was also fun as it is nice having all the options as to what and how to ride. I thought that going back over our tracks was a blast as I could get some speed and get a good feel for railing the lines we had alreadyl cut into the snow. I now know why some feel like they want/need more snowbike power as in the deep, the motor is working so hard to keep itself going, even while tractoring in 2nd or 3rd gear but when I realize that slowing down is ok, I know I'm never going to go turbo or need more than the 478cc that my motor is putting out.

I did wash out in some really deep powder a few times as when the snow is really deep, and I turn too hard in it, the bike and I will just fall over. It is funny as there is never anyone around and a real joy trying to get the bike back up when I can only reach up to the footpeg or header pipe-nice problem to have when there are some that have no snow.

I'll be going up again this Sunday to take my dirtbiking buddy up so he can try it for the first time. More fun and more pics to come.

Ben, regarding getting the bike back up after laying it down in different snow conditions and positions. Both for yourself and those assisting, a place to grap/pull that offers some leverage is very helpful. I've installed some lifting straps between selected bolts at a few different locations that one can get a hand in and pull/lift from a better leverage position. Now when help asks where do I grap I have a good position that is not disturbing something mounted on the bike like wiring that was inadvertently pulled loose prior to the straps. Nylon strap (tiedowns) works good, just melt bolt hole with hot nail so won't ravel.

That is a good idea.

I have seen many others that have installed the pre-made straps that attach to both the lower triple tree/above the front fender, as well as the ones that attach to the rear, either the rear fender bolts or the seat bolts. I might just have to get some for the future. Not so much for the dirt-although they may come in handy for it, but for the snow where like you said, there isn't much to grab on that isn't snow covered and slippery.

Pics from Thursday.

Boy, we are glad we went on Thursday because it was mild yesterday and it rained pretty much all day today and now all the powder is loose granular, for now. At least there is a lot of it as I won't be able to ride for a few weeks as I'll be going on vacation to somewhere warm.

We took the sleds out for one last ring around the rosie and we both realized how much fun they are after being worn out and tired from 2 straight hours of snowbiking, they are a nice change of pace and the one pic I took is of the Expedition up to its chin in powder=nice.
