I understand that there is a 24" rule for this area. Who makes the decision of when it is acceptable to use this area in order to access higher altitudes? Anyone know how much is up there now? Is this the only way to get to higher altitudes? And yes, I understand that there is a large stream that needs to have a snow bridge made over it ;) But still curious about the answers to these questions.

Thanks,

Mike

From our local Mount Baker Ranger station as of today, 11/22/13

As of my check today there is still insufficient snow to open the Mt. Baker NRA for snowmobiling. The snow depth is still less than the 24 inch minimum required at the Park Butte trailhead which is approx. 3400’ elevation.

Three NRCS Snow-tell sites around Mt. Baker that are below 4000’ range from 11” to 18” snow depth & have been losing an inch a day with present WX pattern. The fourth site at 4900’ shows 35” so that indicates the zone where rain changed to snow big time during the last wet period. FS roads 12 & 13 have some icy snow apparently from the end of the last storm as the temperature dropped but the depth doesn’t increase rapidly driving up the roads.
...
It is recommended that folks monitor the snow-tell website for changes in the snow depth.

It is not likely that the NRA will be opened to snowmobiling over the long Thanksgiving weekend since the seven day forecast indicates 0% chance of snow fall at 4000’ on south side of Mt. Baker. At SR 20 & FS road 11, Baker Lake Hwy, the Sno-Park “Closed” & other signs along NF roads will remain in place until the NRA has a snow depth over 24”.

Look at pic below, from out of the trees from Schreibers Meadows and all the way to the snow bridge is a huge boulder field....volkswagon size! They will remove your a arms with a quickness. The opening 2' at Schreibers is not sufficient for enough cover to ride these, once you learn the mountain, you will figure out the ways thru the trees to get past these. The best way I could explain it is.....stay to far right and if you can skip the snow bridge, take the ridge line up peanut knob into salad bowl.

If you reference the link below, look at Snowbi-Wans pics, they are basically from the snowbridge looking down towards the tree outlet of Schreibers.

Baker is a epic riding area, you will love it. Be aware of your surroundings and conditions tho, there is definitely a learning curve to riding Baker.
Have fun!
