school me on 2011+ Ford diesel pickups

What's the word on theses trucks? I know the 6.0 was a pile of **** and I've heard the 6.4 wasn't much better. Do they have their **** figured out yet? What kind of typical problems are people seeing with them (the whole truck, not just the engine)? Can they be tuned and deleted? What kind of mileage are they getting compared to past diesels?

I'm considering selling my Duramax LBZ (that I'm mostly happy with) and getting into one of these instead. I assumed that my LBZ with the EFI tow tune (340 HP at the wheels) and turbo brake will probably tow about the same as the new Ford would?

Any info is appreciated.

2011 ford has 6.7 diesel first year owning truck 12-14 mpg now only gets 9-10 mpg. I think i need to do a delete kit on exhaust other wise love the truck.

I have an 11 Ecoboost, but I have keeping an eye on the 6.7 diesel and did some research before I bought the Ecoboost.

From what I've read, radiators seem to be the common one. Frame rubs or something from what I've read.

I've read about some turbo issues.

Also the motor is not very tough above stock power. Seen several people post pictures of bent rods.

Also, a bunch of the early 2011 trucks have had the valves come apart. I guess they have changed the design on the valves.

IMO, the Duramax is a superior engine. However I think the Ford and the Dodge are superior to the GM truck.

I'm interested to see how the 13 Cummins with Urea and the Aisin stacks up.

I'm not brand loyal at all. Had 2 Cummins trucks before the Eco, and GMC 1/2 ton before that.

I bought my first ford 2012 350 super duty truck in nov got 4500 miles so far no issues. Mpg are getting better 75mph it's getting 15. Pretty good IMO for a big truck owned many diesels first ford. The frame is stronger than ram and chev less flex when pulling big loads 15000 plus. The power is similar in all three that I test drove. I liked the cab, ground clearance, and lock out hub feature on ford. The ford just seemed more functional for me. The ram I had a Cummings and that's it. The chev does not have enough ground clearance I don't like where the def tank is on them. The real test will come in April when I hook up 15000 lbs and use it for 2 months hauling seed and fert.

I bought a 2012 cc long bed f350 lariat fx4 package in april, I now have 28k miles doing nothing but pulling 10-14k trailers. Absolutely love the truck. Only issue was a stupid exhaust temp sensor that shut the motor down at 9k miles (over engineering safety). Power is unbelievable, I really see no need to chip or tune it. The D.E.F. isn't a big deal. Milage is 14-16 pulling and 16-18 empty and I only go the speed limit when someone in front of me is making me.

I came from a 2001 (same set up), bought it new and put 370k miles on her. I wish I would have kept it and sold one of my dodges.

I also have 2 dodges and a chevy and there's a reason that my personal/work truck is a ford.

I tried like hell to buy a Dodge and save a few bucks, but I'm so glad I didn't.

They all make dang nice trucks and I drove/have driven them all. I keep them for a long time, work them, and put a $hit load of miles on them. I'm sure glad ford got their $hit together again.

I Love the truck.

have a 2011 f250 CC Lariat with the 6.7. Have just about 43k miles on it now. Overall great truck. Had an issue early on with a wiring harness that was causing a short. They replaced all the injectors under warranty to only realize it was the harness.

Power is great while towing as well and very comfortable. 1100+ miles to real riding and it makes the ride very doable.

I put duratrac's on and happy with how it is in snow now. Stock tires are great for mileage but suck for traction in snow. Lost a couple MPG in the process, but worth it for how it handles now. Got stuck in a few inches of snow in the UP last year and replaced the tires as soon as I got home.

Beyond pleased with the truck. The DEF isn't a big deal as mentioned. Usually make it close to the oil change before needing to top it off.

Towing the 27' inclosed inline at 75-80 gets about 10mpg, empty I get about 17-18 at highway speeds. With the stock tires i was getting 21-22.

Super ditsy

I've owned just about every ford diesel since the first direct injection in 94. I can say that with in my company we run 5 superdutys starting with 3 2011s and 2 2012s,the only problems so far with the 2011 were with a sencer on the exhaust. Weird back brake wear on another. These are used for forestry application so there not used very nicely, they have anywhere from 40k to 80k miles on them...the 2012s so far are trouble free.In my opinion this is there best truck so far in the way that there has not been any big problems to date..ie: 6l and 6.4s that you hear of, and the 6.7 is tuneable. The truck remains the same all though it feels and is a little lighter then it's past 08-10 due to the lighter 6.7 it's packing. The cab is virtually the same with a slight dash upgrade and seating.
I find it pulls its weight and you won't really notice the 4place or 34 foot travel trailer I pull anyhow. Seems to be a good truck for me since I'm a ford guy and haven't tried any other. That's my 2cents worth.

Super duty

Ops that was super duty NOT super ditsy....darn correction on the ipad

In my opinion...(keep that in mind!)
1. 6.0 stock is potential disaster. But if can buy one cheap, then EGR delete / ARP head studes / SCT tuner / exhaust it is a fantastic engine. Runs smooth, is fast, and I would not hesitate to own (I do!) It is an excellent engine when this is done. I would have no concern of owning this engine with these changes. Cold starts still alittle rough but truck runs extremely well.

2. 6.4 stock is also a potential costly disaster. But EGR delete / exhaust / and tune it it is probably the highest HP diesel you can own. (if you can get an H&S tuner anymore thanks to EPA).

3. 6.7 - first; the fit and finish in cab / wind noise, window-door seals is a disappointment to me for a 50,000 plus truck. I have had 4 superduty trucks - best - tight - clean fit interior were my 2003 - 2005 trucks. My family like the nice stereo because drowns out the wind noise in my 2011 6.7.
BUT - I like how it runs. I also had an exhaust sensor go, had a warning light twice. Decided that with the history of the 6.0 and 6.4, that even though the 6.7 is a "Ford" engine it is still a new motor and WHAT IF the thing ends up needing a $10,000 repair after out of warranty - so decided to be proactive. So (that was my excuse anyway) I spent half the cost of an extended warranty and did the sensible thing... EGR delete, tuner, exhaust. If Al Gore can fly his jet around the world I guess my truck is generating way less pollution then him. So - the power? It was amazing stock, it is more amazing now. It runs great, 2 MPG better mileage, and sounds good. I got an H&S before the EPA decided to try kill another company (H&S).

Super duty

I ran a full race spartin 310 tune and a full dpf/cat delete with a A and E cold air intake on my 08...smoke black when you punched it but produced drag car power. It was a wicked ride but the tranny started chattering with 400 hp at the rear wheels.
Went to the 2011/12, keeping them stock...for now

I was a very loyal ford guy (never had owned anything else, other than a 06 dodge, after the 6.0 disaster), have owned 12 ford trucks over the last 15 years, and still own 3. I too, have had just about every ford motor since the powerstrokes came out in 94-95. I had a 08 6.4L that i did not care for stock, but at 36k the exhaust fell off and i put a tuner on it and it ran liked a raped ape, never had any issues, 85k trouble free...wish i would have kept it.

Then, since it was getting up there in mileage, i started looking at new trucks, and decided to stick with ford, as i had heard alot of good things about the 6.7's. So i found a dealer that made me a great deal on trading in my 08 on a '12 last spring.

I owned the truck for 8 months, and just recently traded it for a Dodge. I had nothing but problems, it spent more time at the dealership than it did on the road, and ford would not fix or acknowledge the problems. If you really wanna know all the problems....let me know and i will tell you, but i am trying to keep from getting to long winded.

The trucks are awesome (and yes i still like ford trucks), but after the way FMCO treated me on this last truck, i may never own another one again!

If I needed a diesel truck would buy a good condition 6.4 and mod it as discussed above.
I'm not sure what truck I would buy if was looking for something new - basically I would probably not buy new again. If needed a diesel maybe buy a good shape/low mileage 6.4 F350 crew and mod it as discussed above, take the difference for a new truck and buy a new sled! It will tow well and is an excellent drag race vehicle!
I'll start something here - you will torch any dmax or cummings that thinks can keep up with you - no way. :boink:

AGREED! Neither my 12 6.7 PSD or my 6.7 CTD would hold a candle to my spartan tuned 6.4L! Wish i could have it back! Looked for a low mileage 09-10 6.4L before buying my dodge, and they were bringing as much money as a new CTD, so decided to give that a shot for now.... All things considered, happy with my CTD, just not the mileage!

I have a 08 6.4 with all the egr delete, straight pipe and h&s tuner. Love it. It has tons of power. No issues out. has around 87000km on it. dad had an 08 as well with just a dpf delete, cold air and tuner. Not a single issue out of it when he sold it with 180000km. He sold it to a family friend and it is going strong with over two hundred thousand now. he now has a 2012 6.7 with just a cold air. has lots of power. rides nice and the interior is great. have heard of turbo issues on the 6.7 when you delete everything. I think they build to much boost. I would recomend either truck, but love my 6.4.

Agreed

Like 07dragonguy said, I to agree with the 6.4 dpf delete, spartina tune and cold air intake. Mine was awesome to say the least, mileage was improved along with its drivability. Kinda sad I parted with it but with 150000km it was time to move forward.

My wife bought me a Black 2012 F350 Lariat 6.7 for Christmas.:face-icon-small-coo
Traded my '06 6.0 SD because she said it was too loud and didn't like the color.

The '12 is a very nice truck. 20+ MPG under 60 mph on the highway.
17 MPG back and forth to work.
During camping season I'll be pulling a 29' fifth wheel and a my 4 place trailer full of ATV's. 21K gross weight.

I've been told by a friend with the same truck as mine that it has the same or better power than the 7.3's.

I'm a Dodge/Cummins guy but I think the 6.7 ford is a pretty decent engine when used how it was intended especially for ford's first diesel. I have heard of issues with the engine in the 450's and 550's just like the 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4's had but I would attribute that to ovarall abuse and overworking. The 6.4 is an amazing engine when tuned but I have not seen very many tuned with over 100k and little to no issues, but that's just what I have seen. I believe the 6.7 if left stock or midly tuned will be a good relaible truck with plenty of power, can't argue that the ford's are prolly the best built truck on the road. Not to sidetrack but the 6.6 duramax is, to me, one of the most impressive engine built. Since 01 it has remained unchanged (displacement wise, I know turbo, injectors, cp3, cp4 have changed blah blah blah)) and it still outruns the best of them in stock form and tuned will hold their own with anything out there. Too bad the IFS, although better than ever, is still IFS and the cabs are tiny.

Well yeah, obviously, considering the 7.3 is well over 10 years old........ I don' thtink 250 HP / 500 FT-LB would go over very well in 2012 in the day of 400 HP / 800 FT-LB stock engines

If we keep under 35" tires, I'll put my IFS up against a production solid axle and see who has to change ball joints and unit bearings first...........

Yes, IFS has its weak points stock if you're into beating on it. But the fixes are well documented and easily avoidable. Put the right braces on the tide rod ends, idler arm, and pitman arm, and you can run sub 12 second 1/4 miles all day including a boosted 4x4 launch with no issues.

Notice the tires stay perfectly straight:

So many people hate IFS just because its IFS. But the truth is, no solid axle rides as smooth and handles as well. And they are virtually problem free in relatively stock form. If your intent is 40" tires, and you spend that money on an IFS lift, you deserve what you have coming to you, IMO.
