Is there any other options besides the SPOT messenger? A guy in my Avy class was talking about one that had a FREE service. I think he said it was McMrtyle or something like that. Anyway, does anyone know of any other options besides the SPOT?

There is another option, I asked the question last spring when questions came up about the time it takes to send a message with the SPOT. I think the SPOT is still a good product but a "Personal locator beacon" or PLB is the other option. They are more expensive and don't have all the features that spot has but they work very quickly. I think if you just do a google search you'll learn all you need or PM me and I'll send you the info I have from someone in Wa. state that has personal experience with them. I forgot to mention that I don't think they have a annual fee, so in the long run cheaper.

I just got back from the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City. I went to the ACR booth and talked with these guys in great detail. We have added them to our line. We do not carry spot. The ACR unit will send out information to the S&R groups with no subscription. Two different plans for e-mail and text are available. The ACR is more expensive, but worth it in my opinion. They also have come out with a waterproof version that is not that much larger. The ACR also can act as a homing beacon. A phenomenon that they discovered. I believe that that freq for homing is 121 Mhz. They work anywhere in the world and are updating their products on a constant basis. PM me if interested.

They are all water proof,
they send in 406
they home in 121(IF sar is equiped)
they send GPS cord so home is not needed.
and they DO NOT get SAR every where in the world. (they do work though)
Again they are the best if you want to live.
