Satellite Rescue Phone

I was thinking about buying a Satellite phone but phone cost, annual fee and minutes add up to over a grand which due to the economic downturn my life isn't worth, right now.:face-icon-small-con

However, I noticed some companies rent on daily, weekly or monthly basis. Seems affordable. Anybody have experience with renting satellite phones? Any recommendations.

I have a two week riding holiday in February and want to be prepared.

I rented on my Grizzly bear hunt to Alaska this spring, worked great, just is pretty costly no matter which way you go. Check out the spot system for a safety backup.

I have a Spot system and I now see where you have the ability to use your cell phone thru there satelite system. So no need for expensive satelite phones anymore. There was an ad in Snowest mag. about it I think.

The new SPOT allows you to send text messages through the device in lieu of pre set messages on previous versions. VERY differenet than a Sat phone. Great innovation in any case, I have the SPOT 2.

I know the Spot and sat. phone are different, but Spot now has a new additional piece that will transmit your cell phone through their system. Not just texting like the Spot 2 does. I'll find the ad and figure out how to upload it so you guys see what I am talking about. Looked like a pretty slick setup.

I'm pretty sure you are talking about the SPOT Connect. You can send a text message, but you have no way of knowing whether or not it was received and you obviously have no way of getting a response. As previously posted, it's great for one-way communication, but still not a sat phone.

Correct he is referring to the SPOT Connect. The SPOT 2 you can send PRESET messages, with the CONNECT you can send custom texts on the fly via your cell phone. You CAN'T make calls though...
