Satellite is successfully shot down

The US shot down that satellite tonight over the Pacific Ocean. I think it's amazing that we have the capability to hit something traveling 17,000+ miles an hour.

However, do any of you really believe we shot it down because it posed a threat to anyone? I think we shot it down just to show that we've got a missile defense system that is fully functional. Take that China, Russia and all other evil-doers!

and North Korea ;)

Would't call it a 100% "Success" just yet.... Center target was the fuel tank, won't know for another 20 hours or so if that was destroyed or not.

Sure the tank was the main target;) They had to be looking for somethig to show off with or there was something that the government didn't want to get into public hands.

The one thing that puzzles me is that with no oxygen in space there was still an explosion?

Let's see the fire triangle: Fuel - check, heat - check, oxygen - ummm not so much.

So how does the fuel burn that is on board the craft to thrust it around in space??? I think they carry oxygen right???

I thought it was something like an enertia deal. You know when something going 17000 mph hits something doing 17000 mph, well Maybe enough damage is done. Cool stuff!! How great would it have been that when N. Korea launched those missles that they get up about a mile then POW!!!

We've had plenty of space stuff that could have potentially fallen on our heads, like Skylab, and we didn't care. This was exactly what you said, a show of capabilities to other nations that have agenda's we don't care for.

The missle was an SM-3 that uses a kinetic warhead.
Here is a picture of the actual launch of that mission:

Well China did the same thing last year or the year before. So it's good to know we are catching up. But was it worth 60 million to fire 1 missile at a 1 billion dollar satellite?
