running like a bag

K ive had my machine out only once this year after i bought it and its running like a bag o crap... it wont rev past 4500, ive changed out the temp sensor and checked the carbs i put in 500 mains for the elevation im at as im not going to the mountains, the needle is one slot out on where it should be but i didnt want to mess with that yet. would that make the machine run like this? the plugs are a nice brown color but the sled feels like its loading up.. had it on the lake today and it had intermittent times when it was bagging then run awesome for bout 20 seconds and pull like a bitch then go back so i was thinking electrical? or would carbs do the same? Ive checked the bellows and stuff no tears in there but the wiring in this sled looks like something a plumber would have done.. yea im a plumber and i wouldnt attempt this lol. Any ideas? thx

Raise the c-clip one notch on the needles (dropping the needles down). My wifes XLT would load up and that simple change transformed the engine.

Not in any way trying to discredit ttyR2's advice. Its just been my experience that my 04' 800 is pretty forgiving with jetting too fat. My sled runs a little more crisp with the needle clip on the second slot from the top of the needle than in the 3rd position down, but has a greater tendancy to deto on the trail in the midrange when in the 2nd position from the top, so I run in the 3rd position from the top. It still rips, but will load up just a bit on a warm day if I'm not going very fast.

This sounds electrical to me.

What sled is this? What elevation are you at? How are the clutches? Mileage?

k ... discovered a burned out light bulb on the det/temp sensor gauge.. it is flashing constantly but i dont get it im running 50/50 race gas in the crank shop motor as recommended by them would a faulty sensor flash like that also and retard the timing the same as the temp sensor did? im running around 2500 ft altitude here the only thing ive left to change is the clutching and weights they are still setup for mountains around 7500 but that wouldnt cause it to not rev up though if anything it would spin up to quickly but im not getting over 4500 rpm. ... I dunno but its getting frustrating with so many potential things.

What mods are done to your motor? What year is it? What pipe(s)? 500 mains sounds way too large unless you have an 02 but then you wouldn't have a det sensor. Stock 03-05 ves's we run them here at sealevel down to about -15f with 400 mains. With twin slp race pipes on a ported motor I was runnning 360's if I remember right? I have 380's in my ex's 03 stock motor with slp twins.

the motor is a 910 crank shop big bore with twin crank shop pipes and stingers. when i bought it the sled had 360 and 370 mains but the guy at the polaris shop said those are way to small for a 910 motor so im a bit confused now. He told me to put in the 500s im worried im gonna run to lean if i put those ones back in but according to the tuning chart it says i should be running 500s the sled is a 2003 vertical escape 163 with 2 and a half inch paddles, it just feels like im running all the time with the choke on even though it isnt and slowly loads up and then says faq it and just bags out.

ok so i pulled my carbs and checked the position of the needles and they were in the number 5 slot so i pushed them to number 3 and it seems to be running better now but now im getting weird tach readings on my dash and on my digitron its going all up and down at weird times what could cause that a short somewhere? seems odd having it on two different sets of gauges.

Next question then is what elevation was the sled setup to run in, and what elevation are you at??? I'm at work and don't have access to my Mikuni slider jetting chart, but those things are invaluable to have if you move around much. They work awesome once you have established a jetting baseline for any given elevation and temp range. About $5. Cheapest tuning tool you will ever buy. If it was running 360-370 even up high, 500's sound too big even at sealevel.

im at 2500 feet here in edmonton and the plugs are a nice brown color, as for the 500 jets the guys at the polaris shop said i should be running those at this elevation with the needles in the number 3 position. It does seem to be running better now i changed the needle position maybe just some fine tuning to help with that bit of a bog on the bottom end. Ill have to wait til we get more snow here to take it out and put some load on it and see how it does on the mid to top end. Yesterday out on the lake it didnt seem to want to get past 5000 and then all of a sudden it would pick up and go like it should up to around 8200 rpm then bag back down it was very intermittent. Now the issue im wondering about is the very erratic tach reading on both my dash tach and on my digitron gauge they are both bouncing all over the place. Is this a voltage regulator symptom?

Your electrical issue sounds like a bad ground wire. The regulator if it were to go bad would pop every light on your sled. Been there, done that several times.

And at 2500', I have to believe you are still way too rich on your mains. I've nver ran a 910 so can't say for sure. I would give Kurt at Fastrax a call in the morning and pick his brain for a good starting point. They have set up a ton of those motors.
