Hey Guys,
I just bought some 2014 pro rmk take off running boards to install on my 2012. The problem is I do not have the cutting templates. Does anyone know of a good place to get these? Or if anyone has the means could they be scanned and uploaded?
Pull all the old rivets holding the old running board edge on ... remove the running board edges... and unrivet the drop brackets from the running boards (drill out with a good cobalt or other quality 3/16" bit.
Loosely bolt the new boards in place and trace where you need to cut.
I don't think you really need to cut the "scallops" out like on the new tunnel... the factory was trying to save every gram of weight they could...You can do a straight cut....If you dont have a plasma cutter... I recommend that you lay it out from the bottom side... and cut it carefully with a jig saw... lean the sled over to the side to do this
Instead of every other "rung" on the new boards getting riveted to the tunnel... you have the opportunity to rivet to every one for more strength.
Use good quality rivets for the install.
Also... with this mod... since you are in there anyway... I recommend that you stiffen the tunnel with the FTX braces (NO... I'm NOT sponsored by them nor in business with FTX) as long as your tunnel is not already kinked.
Heres a photo of my tunnel that may give you some reference.
As others have said, just use the boards themselves as the template. It's what I did.
- Drill out the rail rivets, unbolt and take off
- Rough cut the boards, like the pic above but cut a bit more off so that you're not working against the existing bent up grip areas.
- Drill out the two outside rivets at the rear drop brackets
- Drill out the one rivet on each side that's at the tunnel side of the toe hoop
- Your new boards will line up with these three rivets. Put rivets thru and use a magic marker to trace a cut line. No need to bolt up the boards, since the critical alignment is these rivets.
- Cut out with an air saw and leave enough meat at each rivet mounting hole. You'll have to bend the existing metal at one of the holes.
One more thing that will help the install greatly. Pick up a 3/16" x 12" long aircraft drill bit to drill the holes next to the tunnel and at the toe hoop. Makes for a very quick install. Just about any hardware store carries these.
any guys out there that have put the new boards on a IQ ? I no i would have to make a bracket up front , did you align up the hole in the back and work forward or use a template? hate to take a saw to a perfect tunnel and screw it up, any pics by chance?
Cover the front of your sled when cutting so the metal filings don't get into your motor. after I finished I had metal everywhere under the hood. removed my hood and even had some in the airbox!!
Thank you for all the tips guys. My gut told me it could be done this way. I had a couple people tell me it would be borderline impossible without the templates. I knew I had come to the right place!
