Ok guys I'm expanding my drinking tastes. I used to drink the hell out of Capt and now I am over spiced rums. I just finished a bottle of Appleton Estates and found it to be very pleasent.

Now I am wanting another bottle of Rum, but don't know what's good. I've looked at the store and have seen 4 or 5 various rums in the same price range as the Appleton but don't know what to buy. Sure would hate to drop 30-40 on a bottle and have it suck.

So if any of you guys drink various rums that aren't spiced let me know what it is.

Myers is decent for inexpensive rum also...

I've been on a bourbon kick lately though... Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Elmer T Lee, Elijah Craig... YUM! Buffalo Trace is my fav so far and it is cheap as hell, only about $20 per bottle... every bit as good as bookers and some other $35-45 per bottle bourbons... smooth and bold flavors... if you like bourbon, its worth a try, makes maker's mark and knobb creek look like amatuers...

Bacardi gold is my rum of choice, but I don't know if it's good or not...just what I drink when having a rum-n-coke.

If your looking at expanding your taste why are you still looking at rum? Why not try a different beverage all together? My fa drinks:
Crown and Diet Coke
Capt Morgan Diet Coke
Tequila Sunrise (with top shelf Corzon Tequila)
Jack and Diet Coke
Pinaple Juice, Cruzan Coconut Rum and Cruzan Mango Rum

Never had a bad bottle of Silver Oak Cab. Alexander Valley runs 50-$75 a bottle most commonly and Napa Valley runs over $100. Both are very good wines. Awesome with a steak or sitting around sipping in conversation.

i have heard captain morgan totoo is some good cheese. i know one thing for sure is dont buy Mandarin absolute.....thats som bad chit!

When it comes to rum the darker the better. that's the info I want. what to look for in good rum
Try Captin's Private Reserve mmm :D one of my faves.

I have drank the Reserve, and I actually have a bottle right now, just don't remember how it tastes.

I guess I should also mention I'm trying mixes besides Coke.

Thanks for the bourbon idea,s but I can't do sour mash. I need Crown. Course I could always go back to Patron, just really digging the rum vibe.

As for wine, man I just don't like the stuff. Especially with all the choices and flavors availabel in beer now adays.

a good old whiskey sour or 7 seven is always a good bet. i know you said you wanted to get away from the spiced rums but cruzan is awfull good. drank a ton of it when we were in vegas. i belive that's the right spelling.

keep in mind, if you are thinking the typical sour mash is like Jack Daniels or Jim Beam or George Dickel you need to think again... these nicer bourbons don't taste like creamed corn in the slightest (which most of those typical bar whiskeys do)...

Excellent question. In my opinion, all rum is drinkable, I have a half gallon of Castillo silver on my boat at all times.
here's my listing in order of preference:
Goslings Black Seal
Navy Rum (new zealand)
Appleton
Cruzan light
Cruzan Dark
Barcardi light
Bacardi dark
Havana Club (cuba)
Tortuga (cayman islands & jamaica)
Pussers (BVI)
Meyers

My personal favorite as far as dark rum is Goslings Black Seal, to the point that I will PAY for a drink at a casino if they make it with that rather than the cheap stuff.

Have you ever had 2 buck chuck?? I gotta tell ya, it taste more like a $7 bottle of wine!!!:D

Thanks for the list. I will take it to the liquor store next time!! I've wanted to try the Tortuge, I loved their rum cake, so I figure it's good rum.

Is there a specific Appleton you like? Or for that matter, is there a huge difference between light and dark rum? also how do you get the Havan Club outta Cuba? Also, I'm currently mixing pineapple/oj with the Appleton, and I love drinking Rum Runners at certain bars. Do you have any good mix ideas?

Man whiskey and tequilla were so much easier to get into, as well as beers.

Hop on down the alphabet a little to W. Try a little Jack, maybe some Crown or Black Velvet? Nothing says good morning like Patron & OJ. Slip into a little Crown & apple Pucker after lunch. Baileys, Kahlua & Crown makes for a stupendous afternoon. As evening rolls around zip it up a little with Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, OJ, 7-Up, and a splash of Greandine. Wind it up with a nightcap of Shakers Vodka on the rocks with a lemon peel. Punch out, put the time card in the slot and look forward to tomorrow:D Yep, litreship has is priveleges.
