RPM's drop to 7000 under load?

Myself and a buddy seem to be having similar issues. I have an 06 summit x 800 he's got the 07. Both sleds rip on the flats and get up to 8200 rpm's or so but when we hit a climb or deep snow the rpm's drop to about 7000 and won't really get back up. Anyone had this happen or know what might be causing it?

Thanks... ps we both just had preseason tunes done if that matters.

Yes I had that issue all last year. Turned out to be clutching mainly my secondary, but needed to go threw my primary as well. I replaced my secondary with a team, and then updated the primary with specs to match the secondary and it worked out great. I probably could have rebuilt the secondary and just gone threw the primary and it would have worked out as well. Another thing to make sure to check is your rave hoses are all hooked up.

whats the difference between the team clutch? im still sort of a newbie. also i had some buttons replaced during my tune, would they have missed the other stuff? I'll see if i can see anything with the rave's as well thanks for the insight

Team clutch is an aftermarket clutch. see (http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=185781)

Maybe they did something wrong, or missed something during the install. When I had my stock clutch gone threw the first time they didn't line something up right and it tossed a bushing really quickly.

anyone else have some thoughts here? i am the other guy in this equation. 07 800r 151, bone stock. sled rips in the flats, easily makes ~8200 on trail. On packed climbs or deep pow, it is sluggish getting above ~7500. if i am climbing in deep snow, when i really need power, sled seems to get "stuck" at ~7000 rpm. is the problem the clutch transferring too much load onto the engine? i just had clutch cleaned and inspected by dealer 4 rides ago. sled is new to me, so i dont know if this happened before. if we need to start tweaking clutching, where should we start? clutching is still a bit of a mystery to me, but it looks like i am about to start learning.... thanks for any help.

Well.... I'm no professional at this, but i do have the same sled. I bought it new and had issues with it when i first got it, but i did make some changes to the clutch. I changed the spring to a 90/320 from the stock spring. I lightened the weights to 3 mil from the upgraded 6 mil. and i also geared it down to a 19 tooth on the lower gear. I run it in the 3rd clicker position and it seems to hold 8350rpms consistantly, up hill or flat, powder or packed.

Good luck, i hope it works out well for you. I'm very happy with mine!!:face-icon-small-coo

thanks for the help guys. spent a bunch of time on the phone with the dealer and reading everything i can. riding tomorrow and going to just start by trying to click up in deeper conditions. dealer thinks i might be able to achieve full rpms this way given exhaust valves opening, etc. thoughts? snow conditions are a bit different now but ill see what happens. rave hoses are all hooked up correctly....

Top picks for culprit on the 07:

Primary clutch rollers/bushings
Secondary clutch bushings
Crank
Rave hoses

You will definetly not make up that much RPM with clickers. Rave hoses are an easy check/fix. Dealer may not have replaced the needed clutch parts in your tune-up....if they didn't put new rollers and bushings in the clutches on the 07.....it is highly likely that it needs them. Particularily if it runs good on the flat and craps out in the steep/deep. If everything else is perfect and you still can't get any RPM, I would worry about the crank.

Just double checking but, did you make sure to check the rave hose on the mag side above the carb? The factory hose is too big for the nipple and it may be leaking slighty. My sled danced around rpm-wise for a while and wouldn't hold 8200 when climbing. I thought mine was fine but gave it a good pull and it came right off. You just need to get a piece of fuel/gas line hose to slip over the nipple and put the factory hose over top and clamp it down. This is a post somewhere about it with pictures on here or dootalk I believe. Talk to Winter Brew about clutching, he helped me set mine up and it rips now.

there is also an updated spring for the primary you can put in as well to help with inconsistant rpms

update: rode today, snow conditions are no longer over the hood. sled pulled pretty hard, hit ~8200 on most WOT pulls, including hills. on the way back to the truck after a bunch of riding without really shutting off the sled, had a longer hill and once again the sled wouldnt pull rpm's. stuck at 7000. got back to the truck, belt and clutch were HOT. are my clutch and belt temp a player here? double checked my hoses they are good. sled has updated motor. on a side note, sway bar is coming off this week!
