rpm's down on 800 dragon

i ride with a buddy with a 09 dragon 800, he's on his 5th or 6th motor. it finally seems to be holding together with a pc but after one of the many updates he cannot get this thing to rev past 7950. i have searched these forums and sounds like it's a common problem but i haven't heard of a fix. some guys are saying the glide washers fixed their problem, some have said they done nothing, is there a cure yet or is this still a common problem?

so far this is what has been tried.... 64g weights, 62's, 60's with no change whatsoever....... new primary spring, different pc with different mapping with no change........ slp pipe with no change.

will be going to the secondary next i guess.

Certainly bizarre how many problems some guys seem to have. My 09 Dragon has been fantastic and runs like a champ. You can search a couple of my posts and get my set-up but what I see as an issue from your post is too light of primary weights, I'm running 66 grams. You need to load that motor.
Run 10-66, SLP blue/pink primary spring or equiv., you can pull more helix, I run 62/42 .40 ( Carl's Cycle special) two delrin washers, stock secondary spring, 115 belt shimmed properly, and I geared down to 19/42. I run SLP pipe, and on the original update map running with ethanol wires unplugged, mine rips. 8150-8250 all day long on hardpack or in DEEP pow.
One thing to note, the OEM map appears lean in the midrange and if your buddy's riding style is such that he holds the throttle steady in the mid he will have burn downs which with 5 motors, sounds like he has. He needs to learn to blip the throttle constantly on the trail and not hold it steady for extended periods. Different story at WOT, they seem to like that all day long :face-icon-small-coo

I have the same sled as GKR and we run the same setup, except a Team Bright Green primary 150-340 and my ethanol wires are plugged in. Mine runs flawlessly as well. 8250-8350 all day long. I would recheck everything from the primary back. Making sure it is all in spec. Belt condition is good I am guessing. As GKR has mentioned get the weights as heavy as you can to load that motor. As well try more initial angle on the helix. Engine wise you would think it is good on #5. Good luck!!!!

There are different approaches to clutching that can get the same results.

First thing you ned to know is the track length, rider weight plus gear, gearing, and typical elevation you ride at.

I have been noticing that heavier riders (like myself) after the compression loss on the update see a loss of RPM,s that some others do not. I dont know if this is Gosple yet at this time but it seems to be at a minimum...a trend.
I tried heavier weights without knowing, as they were changed without my approval....as the Polaris mech. said the same thing about "these motors want to be loaded". I ran it for a test with 66g and that same SLp blue/pink, 245lbs plus gear.19/42 gearing..elevation 55-8000ft., stock secondary. RPM's in the tank..did do better at low elevation...overall a waste of time and money IMHO. Different springs and weights in the primary only slightly compensated. But this is all elevation dependent.

FRustrated I went to Kurt at Fastrax and then went to the secondary and changed the spring/helix and one delrin washer, put 62s and stock spring back into the primary and problem solved! Flat out pulls hard 8150 straight up 1000 ft plus pull in deep snow above 5000 ft. Hardpacked trail ill hit 8250-8300

Call Kurt at Fastrax and he has a setup that works! When I told him my setup he told me without me telling him what RPM,s I was most likely seeing at a known area. I was surprised that he hit the nail on the head that easily...must not have been his first rodeo. There was no guessing or try this and see how it runs etc. type of BS. Kurt knew exactly what was happening and knew exactly what to do to resolve it.
FYI...that SLP blue/pink primary spring is only 10lbs heavier on the top than the stock Polaris spring. It wont make a big difference.

I would give Kurt a call, he is a no BS type of guy and wont sell you something just to sell it if it wont work...he is not a dealer either. ..for around 300.00 you can get your drive train correct. Once you know for sure you have your drivetrain right then if still an issue you can go to fuel systems.

Good Luck!

i was having the same problem as you when i first bought my sled. could not get it to rev up or hold rpm's. changed weights and it did nothing.

Anyways, I now am running a straight 38 degree helix in my secondary with 10-66's and slp blue/pink in my primary and it pulls hard all day at 8350rpm's +-100. I am running at 3k' average elevation.

Forgot to mention that my setup is for 2500-5500'. I would imagine that I would use less weight at a higher altitude. Also, I go 250-260 geared up and have never had a problem with RPM after the update. Lucky I guess? Curt at Fastrax would be a great phone call. Dealt with him with my shock purchase this season. There is not a better person in the business to deal with. A straight shooter. Good luck with the clutching. When you get it nailed down these machines rip!!!!
