Changing internet providers (our internet service has not offered an upgrade to service since spring of 2004!!!!

Yeah, we have 1.5 upload and 500k download or something like that.
I can't watch a movie, even on ultra LOW definition without it stopping every three seconds and buffering for 10. IT SUCKS. Qwest/Century link is NOT doing anything in our valley to update service.

So anyway, I can get 12mb service for about the same price from another new provider if I drop my Century Link landline and their "highspeed" DSL.

They told me the Qwest/Century Link modem needs to go. Maybe the modem is the actual problem (it's only a couple years old though), but the old modem was operating just the same as this one.

So to my question....

What modems out there are kick azz and flow a LOT of bandwidth?
I can shop at Costco...and they have a LOT of options.

Advise please?

Am I on the right track with these?

Every Tuesday night I have a five hour class with a cohort of people. We need to be able to see and talk with each other online. My crappy Qwest service is worthless. Can't even sign in.

Will these routers do what I want?
Or are they overkill with 12mb service?

I have had my best luck with Linksys routers.

Living in the boonies sucks for Internet.

Tough to "get there" watching 3 seconds at a time.

I guess corporate thanks we are in the boonies.

Don't they know we have electricity here only a few days a week? It's just on the days that end in "y".

It doesn't matter really they are all about the same just some have more bells and whistles. The only thing that really matters is that the one you choose has to be compatible with the your service provider network protocol. I am sure that is the reason they told you your old one had to go. when they update their services protocols the older modems/routers can't or don't support the new service They should have a list of compatible ones on their web page. Most of the stores in my area only sell ones that are compatible with Charter Communication which has the monopoly in my area

12mb service? Ouch I feel for you. Just got the 150mb service at the house (The only advantage of living close to the big city) and had to get a new modem to support that. Every time I have to upgrade I have just asked for the current modem list and my service provider sends it or a link to it. Then I just shop based on that list. That way I always know it will be compatible. I usually just buy the cheapest modem on the list that supports my speed but always spend good money on the router to get a very strong wifi signal around all of the house.

If you're talking modems, they should give you one that will work, and most of the new cable modems also double as routers. If it's the cable company, check to make sure which modem they're giving you. Is sounds like for your usage, the built in router is usually fine.

If you buy your own modem, the cable company (or whoever the provider is) will give the you the standard that you need to look for. DOCSIS 3.0 is normally what they are looking for.

I finally gave up on Linksys and bought a netgear Nighthawk router, which works really well. I live in a populated neighborhood though, and the the router features like a guest network and other security are important to me. The netgear also performs beamforming to individual devices and makes the streaming experience much better as a result.

Personally, I wouldn't spend money on a router if the provided modem has one built in and I didn't have many folks around me.

This level of performance does NOT come cheap.

Willing to pay up a little bit...so went with this one.
The R8000 is right up there!!

Chose the position of the unit in the house carefully.
Then, SPEND THE TIME to TUNE each of the Antennas to get the best reception in the different areas of your house.

OK thanks.
We have a 4800sq ft home, so I'll have to work on that.
And unfortunately, the router will be in the down stairs corner.
Is there such a thing as a router hub or relay so I can boost one end of the house?

You can use a wireless repeater to boost the distance. I have never used one or set up one but the technology is nothing new. your guess is as good as mine on who makes the best one.

And there is just NO WAY for you to locate that box anywhere else in the entire house?

I also have a very large 3 story home, and with proper positioning the NightHawk gives all rooms VERY good coverage, but it has to be placed in the right location for signal propagation.
