Roth or Hagar?

With winter winding down it's getting pretty slow around here.

I'll try to come up with some decent topics to argue about so we have something to check in for.

Todays topic:
Who brought more to the Van Halen table, David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?

I would rather listen to the Hagar era music, but I would have loved to have seen one of the early Roth era live shows.
I don't care for the return of Roth music at all.

If sales are an accurate measuring stick, I have to believe that the Hagar version sold more Albums, but I could be wrong.

I suppose some jokester will reply that the Gary Cherone era was best.
I don't think even Gary himself believes that!

I think my favorite VH album would be 5150, but 1984 is a close second.

Solo. I was a little disappointed when he went to Van Halen. Thought he was better alone, at least that is how I remember it. Wasn't sober a lot back then.

This is weird, but I liked Roth's solo stuff following his VH exit more than much of his VH stuff.

I vote old VH with Roth. But I like Sammy better then DL Roth, guess I just like older VH tunes more. If that makes sense??!!

How about Bon Scott or Brian Johnson? For over 30 years I haven't come to a conclusion on that one!!

That's a GREAT question! It is deserving of it's own thread!
Myself, it's Johnson hands down.
Can you imagine "Thunderstruck" having it's azz kicking power with Bon Scott?
I feel like I could have inserted most any of their hard driven songs in that example, but Thunderstruck even with being terribly overplayed, has to be the perfect example of ACDC in their prime!

Now to argue with myself.....

Maybe it's a coin toss!

Very true. I would have to give a slight edge to the Brian Johnson era.
I get a lot of flak from my nephews about me being a big AC/DC fan, they complain that they're scratchy sounding, repetitive, too simplistic........ I say you punks never got to experience a kegger party outdoors with pallets blazing away and AC/DC blasting full bore thru a couple 6x9 pioneers sitting atop a pickup bed toolbox!!!!

That's awesome, we lived the same childhood!

Now if you had the pioneer SuperTuner (about the size of a small toaster oven) hanging under the dash you were a true audiophile and were required to play music at every kegger!

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I had the Sparkomatic setup.

Krako for me. I loved the music of our youth, but my favorite tune in a car came from the tailpipe of a big Pontiac. Less money on tunes meant more on FBI (f@&$ing big Indian) under the hood.

Chevy short box bucket seats, beer window, Pioneer deck, Pioneer amp, Pioneer tune ups, Jensen triax 2s in home made boxes with enough wire to reach the roof

Personally I like the Hagar era of VH better overall, but the first two VH albums are their best IMO. I too wish I had been able to see them when DLR was at his peak. I have been a die hard Iron Maiden fan since 1980-ish, but to this day I don't think I have ever been as excited for an album as I was for VH's 5150, and it didn't disappoint at all. I've been a Sammy fan since I heard his "Danger Zone" album. I can still remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard "Why Can't This Be Love".

According to this site, the first DLR era sold 56 million albums and the Hagar era sold 29.5 million if you include 2.5 million from their live album in 1993.

Kraco, sparkomatic, pioneer tune ups...I'm dying, lol!!!!
Pioneer tune-ups!!!!!! That made my day!! I had totally forgot about those. If you had tune ups around here then you were an audio God!!!!!

Remember the super, hi-fi, graphic equalizer's? Slightly smaller then a VCR, knobs had to be in a perfect V pattern for ultimate clarity...although really I couldn't notice any difference. Lights were cool though!!
