Ronald Regan was a freaking chump

I'm tired of reporters and politicains proclaiming Regan as one of the great presidents blah blah blah. I remember when He refused to further subsidize the American farming industry any more or bail it out. Banks offered no leverage and my family and I went to auctions all the time while people lost their farms. I just wonder how many people who lost their farms in the 80's to reaganomics just choke up with hatred every time they see this garbage of bailing out the banks when they were left high and dry. Now the govt wants them to fork over $ to the very same institution who took their farms away.

Our new prez barry obama has said on several occasions how he admires old Ronnie. I have a feeling he'll get a chance to pizz off farmers again. Alot of guys got caught with their pants down this last season. Speculation is running rampant already about a repeat of the 80's. Guys got caught up in the ethanol hype and leased at high land rates, ordered new equip, locked in at higher prices accross the board. Then prices plummeted. I know some people don't care about farmers, cause they always buy new trucks and being a dirt farmer is just a gravy train right?

Sorry about your problems but I remember the double digit inflation and 18% interest rates of the Carter administration that ReagaN inherited and completely changed the economy around with his policies, I think there are a few air traffic controllers who have the same view as you. The problem of Farmers, Banks, home industries or anyone relying on the government to bail them out are staggering, that was the problem the government had aalready got the farmers relying on the government. Sometimes it is tough but the only way the market will work is no bailouts, Reagan proved that no matter what anyone thinks the results spoke for themselves. Swampy:confused:

...... I remember when He refused to further subsidize the American farming industry any more or bail it out......

The answer to the original problem is right in front of us..^^^^^

"Government isn't the solution, it's the problem". Once a sector gets used to the public tit, bad things happen.

Free market needs to reign....:beer;

SO because Reagan didn't give enough handouts to the farmers you don't like him?

I get tired of hearing about the "poor" farmers who are driving new Pu's every year and their spoiled azz kids driving new ones too....give me a break..
I look around and every farmer I know has a nice new big house and
new suburbans, and new snowmobiles....while they put up fences to keep everyone out of the property their grandparents got for pennies or
forced the native americans off of....

All Reagan did was bring the USSR to it's knee's...remeber going to sleep
wondering when the world would end? How many millions of people in this world are free now thanks to the fall of the Soviet Union? but because he
didn't give you a handout you are pizzed? If you cant make it farming
try something else, just quit crying about it!

well said, rep for you

Right now many farmers are dependent on Govt in one way shape or form. The Govt started scraping the CRP program forcing them to plant and wanting them to plant corn for ethanol. The Ethanol industry has yet to stand on it's own two feet while being subsidized by the govt heavily and then being manipulated by the oil companies trying to inflate the price of ethanol blend fuels. The Govt will soon try to heavily cut programs as they have in the past when the deficit comes to question.

I'm not a farmer, never have been. Came from a small agriculture town and watched alot of people I know go through some very difficult times. I still have coffee with the local farmers and it's disturbing sometimes. You see guys that struggled to make lives better for their kids by getting stuff paid for and buy sell agreements funded by life insurance for when they die their children don't squabble over whats left. They leave their son the farm who then has the opportunity to operate with everything paid for but then they go and buy new equipment and build new structures etc on the money intended for them to not make the same mistakes. There are alot of young farmers about to get their cages rattled. They have put themselves on the line with high operating costs over the last couple years but the yields and prices were holding well up until this fall. Now with the economy struggling and prices a fraction of what they were. Alot of guys will probably no longer be farming in a couple years.

My whole thing is that Reagan was placed on a white horse these last few years. And I admit he did some good stuff. But I remember "Farm Aid" etc. And the refusal for govt intervention. I'm chapped that people think it's OK to bail out the banks and not tell us what they did with the money and to approve another infusion. I'd say bail out the homeowners who got fleeced by the banks in the first place. I have several friends in the mortgage business that would talk about how stressed they would have people that by the signing date people would just be exhausted and just want it done with and sign away to nearly 10K of closing fees rolled into financing and just the gouging other brokers would do. I happen to respect farmers and keep an established relationship going, not just when I want to hunt. And just like anyone else they put their pants on one leg at a time too. "Save the Farm Export Reagan".

I usually don't post on topics like this but a few comments on this thread make my blood boil. Just cause one guy doesn't agree with Reagans farm policy you immediately group all farmers as a bunch of beggars waiting for a handout.

Lets not forget that the main reason you have the standard of living that you have today is because of agriculture in this country. What percentage of your income is put towards food compared to someone in say Europe where you could be taxed more heavily and pay more for food. This low percentage allows you to spend that other income on things like snowmobiles.

while they put up fences to keep everyone out of the property their grandparents got for pennies or
forced the native americans off of....

Who cares how much their ancestors paid for their property, it is still THEIRproperty to do with as they please. You would be pretty pizzed off if someone came and drove their trucks, 4-wheelers, camp trailers accross your lawn. Only difference is you don't have to depend on your lawn that someone just ruined to pay your bills.

Let's put it another way....

Most on here (hell, most Americans) think ALL bail outs suck.

Let the chips fall where they may. Banks, or farms.

Tech A I hear ya, for those of you from the Midwest you prob wont agree with him and its cause in this area his description of farmers is dang near spot on and it maybe different than the farmers in your areas. Look into it. SE Idaho per pop has one of the highest % of millionaries out of any area in the US. Who are these Millionares you ask, farmers, yup thats right Farmers. richest guys I know are farmers. They always have a new pickup, new sleds, new dirt bikes, and new quads since they are "tax write offs" for them.

Well if farming is so easy and such a gravy train. Go join em and start farming then. Otherwise shut the hell up and quit dissing someone for finding a way to make a living.

Nuff is enough! Fosgate read your own signature. You are Beochin about something that is a way of life. The man did what he could, which was unifying our country and taking on the world. I know it was hard on the agricultural folk but nothing compared to what they faced during the Depression. Those folks had to slaughter their animals, and plow crops back into the fields. Just a case of more supply then demand. What brought agriculture out of the Depression was a lil thing called WWII. Ronnie did what he had to do. Do you think that the way he fixed our economy to become the most productive economy, that ran effectively for 20 plus years is a chump? Check your facts. Communism defeated, the middle east pizzin their pants, the wall down, US econ recovered from extremely worse position then current. Farmers live a hard life, yet they choose to do so as free men.

Cinton really helped the farmers out with N.A.F.T.A. I'll bet that hurt farmers more than anything. Why buy American cheese and meat when you can get it from argentina for a fraction of the cost. Milk prices paid to the milk producers (Farmers) where so cheap 6-7 years ago that dairy farms here in Utah where dropping like flies.

Free market needs to reign....:beer;

Those words are part of the reason why I don't like Reagon... Oh, and free market reigns... I would hate to see what this world would look like with ONLY free markets... I think we would be right back to feudalism real quick! Do I think government is always the solution? No, but they do serve a roll to play, just as markets do too.

I would think this last couple of years would be proof that free markets do not always work as intended. The problems with free markets is what their purpose or overall goal is to do.. They are a minimizing function, minimizing cost. Only problem is that minimizing cost, has an associated cost that is felt by the society / the nation. Just look at the huge problem of trade in balance.....

Your argument forgets or minimizes the good things that government does for the people. I would rather have big government then big business, but honestly, I would rather have small government and lots of small businesses...

Regan had his bad moments and good ones. Give him a break.

In the 80's not only farmers were hurting, all AG was. And many lost what they had because their operation worked at $6 doller wheat, but not at $3. Margins were out of hand.

Most people have no idea on the overhead required to run a operationg, regardless if it is farming or with cattle. No idea, they just look at the equipment they have, ect. If it was easy, everybody would do it. Not be a dying industry.

And I know i will get slammed on this by all you farmers, but CRP is welfare for farmers. Get off your Azz and make a living. Not once have i been paid to not kick the bulls out with my cows, or been bailed out because my feeder calves dropped 10 bucks a hundred because of another active cow with BSE in Canada. Farm it, or sell it.
