RMK Chaincase question

I need to change out the chaincase oil in my 08 700RMK for the first time. Can anyone tell me if the gasket is the round rubber type or the flat washer type ? If it's the round rubber, can I reuse it or should I put a new one in each time I remove the cover ? Also, are people using the the Polaris gear oil or going aftermarket ?

Thanks for the help.

On my 09 it is the rubber o-ring & I re-use them unless it is gouged.

The plug on mine is a 6mm allen. No need to remove the cover & I use synthetic 75w/90 gear oil.

Plenty of conversation on the gear oil if you use the search button.

Good luck,

I thought about removing the plug but I also thought it might be better to wipe if clean since this was the first time with new gears and all.

I do some searching for oil threads.

Thanks.

Unless you plan on pulling the chain and gears, I would think there wouldn't be enough surface area to wipe to justify pulling the cover. I'd just drain and refill. If you are concerned, shorten the change interval and watch the dipstick magnet.

I have had nothing but grief with the threads pulling in the case / drain plug. Be very careful with the removal and install. If you feel anything at all not right, pull it and start again. The threads on the ones I have done almost fell out.

If you do strip it, Belknap (Napa) makes a self tapping drain plug that fits way better and has a crush washer. I just took the old one in and matched it. The self tapper was 2 sizes over if I remember right. Good luck. EW

Just pull the drain plug and clean the magnet.Taking off the cover just increases the odds of leaking and stripping the bolts.
I used 75/90 synthetic gear lube last season for 1000 miles with no problems, although I see others recommending ATF.
Retension the chain while your at it.It's easy, look in your owners manual under maintanance.
The whole process should take you less than 2 :beer;:beer;
Pete :)

The drain plug on the bottom works well for me. Just did it a couple days ago. The tough part is getting oil into the side plug (in the foot well). I had to make a hose to put on the end of my funnel to get the oil in there.

Whille you have the cover off you might want to get an aftermarket alum one. My plastic one leaked from day one. I hear they melt sometimes too. To pump oil into the changecase I used a lotion bottle pump top and a hose that fit on the end to pump the oil into the case. Much easier, less mess and free.
