RMK 900 What's the deal

Hey

I have been looking around at different used sleds. I seem to come across alot of RMK 900s.
I know that they had a bad wrap, but what is the real issue with them.

I was on the mountain last year and talked to a guy with one. He said he liked the sled, but was on this 3rd motor. All covered under warranty.

Was it just a bad design or something that has been fixed by Polaris. The prices on those sleds seems to be lower than most others.

Sorry if this one has been beaten to death, but I would be really interested to find out the straight goods on these sleds. I think they are a great looking sled, and most have the 166 track.

Thanks

They are junk. Polaris pulled the plug after one year of production. That says alot. They came with 159" or 166" tracks(maybe a 151"?) I've seen a few climbing in the Snowies and they went pretty good. All I know is if Poo gave up on the 900 that fast, maybe you should too.

WHat this guy said....

rmk 900

I agree stock they were not too good but if you buy a used sled with all the proper updates done to them they are one of the most under valued sleds out there. If you have the money to buy a new one than go ahead. If you want to pick up a sled for around $5000(less than half of a new sled)the 900 is the sled to buy. Just make sure the necesary improvements are done. There is lots of info on here about what needs to be done. If a 900 is set up right it will keep up to most stock sleds.

Two years. '05 and '06. Don't go with an '05 unless you get a screaming deal on it... count on a new crank and pistons. Every machine has its problems and you'll hear more about the problems here than the reliability of any machine, whether it's red, green, blue, or yellow.

I love my '06 151.... no problems whatsoever. With a little bit of work, a 900 will run very well.

Talk to those that have 'em, mountainhorse is probably the best one to ask about all the technical stuff. I'd buy another in a heartbeat if it came down to it.

Sorry. I thought they only lived for one year. Like I said, the few I've come across went up the hills as good as anything. Finding any aftermarket, and for that matter Polaris parts, might be a little tougher than usual.

If you get the slp motor mounts then the 900's are all right. I rode a stock one and they didn't seem any worse than arctic cat and ski-doo's 1000. They are very torquey. The good part about these sleds is that they are all digital. Everything can be reflashed.

Bad,bad bad, R&D, I heard that polaribus stock took a little dip because of there rush rush mentality on this one,Hard way to learn but they seem to bounce back alright. All sleds have probs but this one will be around for awhile.

A 900 Polaris is hit and miss. If you buy one that eats belts then it probably will have other problems.

To get a "stock" 900 from gernading itself it needs around $1000 to $1500 in very basic changes.

Like wire harness, voltage regulator, Throttle cable, TPS setting , motor mounts. clutch balance, torque stops, checl bolt torque specs, remove front radiator and so on.

Buddy has an 05 RMK, picked it up at Haydays in Sept 05 for $6200 with 476 miles on it. All the updates had been done to it. He then put an SLP pipe and can on it. He now has almost 4000 miles on it, and not one lick of trouble with it. At haydays this year wecame across another 05 with 675 miles on it, all updates done, slp pipe and can for $3695. He almost bought that one because it was so cheap.

Do itt!!

buying a 900 is worth it right now, they are dirt cheap and you are getting a pretty dang good sled for the price. Make sure you buy one w/ a Pipe and intake system ( preferably SLP) and all the updates.
@ the end of my 900's second season I lost the crank, replaced on warranty and ready for another 2 years of hard hard riding. it climbs awesome and I love it in the trees.

The 900 subject is touchy. Either guys loved them or hated them or had no idea but bash anyway.

Had two my Dad and I loved ours 166 05 SLP everything porting you name it. Stock I agree they sucked after the vents and SLP work and new Polaris motor mounts I never had a problem 800 miles give or take per belt even with the old 80 series belt. If I was looking for a nice cheap sled I would buy again in a heart beat.

Keep this in mind the cranks did have a problem there is no denying that fact we never lost a crank till the very end. Polaris treated us great and that is the reason my Dad will keep buying Polaris.

Also Mountain Horse on here is a expert as far as parts for it I swear he was born with a parts Fiche in his brain.

Edsel

The internet has a habit of taking one sled that has problems, and pretty soon the entire build was junk. That said - the 06 RMK is a better buy then the 05 - both can be made much better with a full SLP upgrade (airbox, pipe, can, venting, remove radiator, etc.) There are dealers up here with new 06's in the crate cause they had such a bad rep - I've only ridden three of them (05 159", 06 159" and 06 166") - all worked very well on the hill, and they can be a great alternative to the high $$$ stuff they are selling this year. If you can find a new one, get every bit of extended warranty available.

I have an 06 900 rmk and love it, no problems with it and about a 1000 miles on it, all my brothers and dad own these sled and love them also, all together we have 1-05 900 and 3-06 900's and the only problem we had is in my one brothers 06 he had a crank issue, other than that great sleds, wouldn't sell mine unless i could afford a turbo dragon 800.......

Where were all of you guys two years ago!!!!! All we heard on here was how bad they were. Now, it's the TOTAL opposite! Life's a trip, eh cavrone:cool:

Where were all of you guys two years ago!!!!!

I was sitting right here with a bunch of others defending them and putting them on top the hill every Saturday. Got tired of doing it. Each to his own, and if I were you take 90% of the talk on here as here say because alot of guys speak from no experience. Talk with the guys that are out riding them.
