Riser....No more!!!

So after reading several posts about risers, with WyoBoy, BCIL, HD4ROB, and several others saying lower is better, I decided to give it a try today. Pretty setup nasty spring snow in West right now and the sled kept fighting me, so got pissed and ripped off the 3.5” Rox Riser on the mountain. Thought what the he!! lets give it a try, can’t hurt.

First a few facts;

Sled – ‘06 M7 153 stock handle bars and motor other then head and clutching, bought with a 2 inch riser before putting on the Rox.
Me – 6’4” 210 – 215 pounds depending on how much fast food I ate during the week.
Average Joe rider at best!!!

Ok so the results…..WOW…..why the F did I not do this sooner. There will be a black 3.5” Rox Riser listed in the swapmeet very soon. I bought the sled with a 2 inch riser so never ran without. The 2 inch riser fought me also, and like most others think, I thought I needed higher. All around the sled is so much more fun to ride and leverage, leverage, leverage. I’m no extreme rider by any means but that doesn’t matter; climbing, sidehilling, jumping, trail, carving, maneuvering through the trees, steering - in every way it was so much easier and tons more fun to ride. I’ll admit it was a little weird at first but within 5 minutes I was loven it. Yes I have to bend over a little and bend my legs a little more at times but the leverage and control I gained was awesome/amazing!!!! I can maybe see in 2 feet of fresh and playing in a flat meadow, the higher bars might be nicer, but not worth it for everything else. Maybe I’ll put an AC adjustable post and the new bars for those times.

Again, I’m an average joe mountain rider, this is my first sled and my 3rd season on it. My life-long passion has always been dirt bikes; it’s what I’ve always done and what I’m used to. After taking off that riser this is the closest the sled as come to feeling like my bikes. Obviously totally difference machines, but I just felt more at home and comfortable.

Disclaimer time, I don’t want to get into a pissing match/debate which is better - obviously this was my personal findings/opinion and others maybe completely opposite. That is cool, we all are individuals and have our personal preferences. But there is something to be said when WyoBoy, BCIL, HD4ROB, and many others say lower is better. Just glad I finally took the advice and ran with it. Thank you!!!!! :face-icon-small-hap

The problem with the AC adjustable post is you forget to lower it until too late. Have fun.

How can you ride for more than 20 mins at a time without your legs giving up on you from bending over so much? I'm 6'3" and have been lifting weights for years and tried lower bars but found it just made things much harder on the legs. And it made me always feel like I was going to go over the bars?

I honestly think a lot of has to do with 29 years of riding dirt bikes, been on a dirt bike since I was 5. My body is just use to leaning over and having my legs bend at times. I could stand straight without bending my legs and it felt fine. Also I ware knee pads and think, again from riding bikes, I naturally squeeze the tank/seat taking some of the pressure off your upper legs. I just gained a ton of control and leverage and it just felt more natural to me and in more situations I felt I was controlling the sled vs it controlling me.

I'm 6'6" and know the feeling, its why I put the adjustable post in my std m1000, so If the trail was rough I could raise it a little and not feel like I was going over the bars. But if I did not have the option I would leave it down and slow down on the rough, it does give you that much more ability and control in backcountry riding. I would have to have them up a little for jumping too, but still low enough I had to bend down a tiny bit to grab the bars.

I dumped my big risers for a short set 2 years back, the difference was incredible.

I listened to wyo and hd4rob i bought a 6'' 1 ride and took it off now im running a 2'', really if i had the money I wouldn't even go with a cat adjustable I'd go with a set of pro tapper or fly bars and a different post and adjustable riser ( would be stronger then the cat one and i hear how they move up and down at times etc.)

Chris Burandt sez "trash your powder strap and lower your bars":face-icon-small-ton Oh, now he rides a Pro POO after he became famous riding a turbo M8.

no riser

I understand......I can see the benefits of both, as I have rode both ways. I'm 6'5" and love to play in the trees, but also run the logging roads pretty hard. The extreme tall bars worked well on my ol' XLT to give me some leverage, I liked it for boondocking but they sucked on the road...felt like Ape-hangers.....

My M7 has a 2" riser that it came with. These bars are probably 3" lower than what was on my XLT. it feels way better......after reading this, I may remove the 2" riser and try it stock.....I have a buddy that has a stock M7, if he comes up this weekend I may try out how it feels.....

Has anyone rode with the risers that move the bars forward some? How do you like them? I've thought about replacing my existing riser with one of those, but if I took the riser off that is on it now, then they would be in that same position.....hmmm

Good thread anyhow.....

6'6" 275 ready to ride and there's no way I can ride with stock bars. Legs and back hurt too bad from being hunched over all day. Problem is the guys that design these sleds are average size and build so no handlebar rise is perfect for them, but not for me. Agree that lower bars likely does mean more leverage but its something I wont be without. Liked the feel of the 2012 adjustable risers but a new anything isn't in my future....

Thats why I put the adjustable in my M's, all the way down for hill riding and up a few clicks for flat riding. The 2012 height will screw you bad, mine are getting hacked to go down.

Cat adjustable or BDX? I can't remember if the 06s were retrofittable or not...

It can be done. Believe you have to change the lower mounting location to account for the curve in the new post, original posts are straight. I have not done this but remember reading that somewhere.

been dare

read all the toooo high tooo much fun bar posts. Pulled out my 05 and rode for a day with stock bar and 3 " riser.........was yeah ok.

Dropped my bars 3" on my M8, rode for a day when I couldn't wait for it to end.........way not good.

Next day back to 35" off the clutch deck with firecat bars I've been using since 03. Ideal. Go low when you golf. In the trees ? Not good.
6'4".........maybe low works, stock bars low maybe works. One mod issure put to bed for me.

Come on guys, I've been checking the riser for sale adds, I gotta get my sno pro bars higher so I have an excuss for riding as bad as I do! Don't want to pay the price of new when used will do.
