Reverse going downhill?

I spoke with a buddy that works at Polaris and he was saying that the tech riders would put the sled in reverse while coming back downhill after a climb. Said something like it helped keep them from going so fast. Has anyone else heard of this or tried it to see if it actually works??

Thanks for the info!

works well if it isnt a sheet of ice. i still use a belt thats been cut down to fit just over the ski loops and stop @ the spindles for icey conditions. i dont know how hard it is on your belt or other drive components buy doing this though.

I tried it for the first time on Friday and it did work but I didn't hit my button until after I got going pretty quick so it got a little hairy for a second but as soon as the reverse "finally" kicked in it worked pretty well. I think it would do much better in pow because the snow I tried it on was pretty set up but in pow I don't usually need help slowing down anyway so ?? I may experiment with it more but make sure I have a plan to not need to get it back in forward in a hurry.

It does work but you need to be careful how you go about it....either put it in reverse before you start and apply throttle as you go down, but if you are already going down you will need to hold the brake on while you hit reverse and continue holding it till the reverse finishes engaging. Then you can let go of the brake and apply throttle. You can slow down pretty good as well as dig yourself in if needed to stop. Been doing it for a couple years without any problems. Will not help on ice.

I have done this a lot since installing my turbo. Some of the stuff we have to go down now is crazy step. I have noticed that occasionally I start to burn my belts. Not sure if the clutches just grab the belt and won't release it or what, but I have noticed it. Plus if the sled really starts to run and you decided that you need forward throttle and not reverse it can be hard to get it switched back over.
It does work though. Just have to be careful with it.

I do it frequently. Works well to give it some gas and dig yourself a spot to come to a rest. Works like a charm. I just make sure the brake is applied.

Yup and no brake = busted chain/gears so be smart about it.

Have FUN!
