Reuse head bolts when changing head or replace?!

I managed to break a bolt on my head while changing to a PAR 12.5 on my 2011 800 this weekend.

I read through the install sheet that came mith the head and it said to replace all the head bolts.

Then I checked with what SLP recommended about this for the kits that comes with a different head, and I could not find anything about replacing the bolts there.

So, should I replace or reuse?

I have never had any problem reusing the head bolts, and I think my torque wrench was off and might have caused the bolt to break. But since it said they all should be replaced I started wondering what to do...?

No need to replace. I just took a look at my PAR head install sheet, and it reads "replace the bolts in the head". Meaning reinstall the bolts in the head.

If it's the first time removing-reinstalling, I wouldn't worry too much, but they certainly CAN stretch, and not allow you to get proper torque.

Thats what I read to, "Replace the bolts in the head". I guess I have misinterpreted it.

If you got any coolant into the bolt holes (when pulling the stock head) you can hydrolock the head bolts and they'll break under proper torque. Like others said - no need to replace, just make darn sure the holes are DRY!

Have FUN!

I did use q-tips to remove all the coolant so I know they didnt hydrolock.

But a friend of mine which is an airplane mechanic stated that there is a difference between setting torque "dry" or "wet". By setting torque when the threads are lubricated in some way this can cause overtorque even if the wrench says it is correct.

I have never heard of this before, but it kinda makes sense...and I would imagine he knows his stuff since he travels all over the world fixing rather expensive machinery:face-icon-small-win
