I bought my place in 1993 and this old barn was in a overgrowth of trees and barely visible. The West wall was blowing in the wind as the 45' of support footing had fallen over years ago. I was tempted to tear this barn down but was compelled to repair it and use it at the time to store things in. We pushed the barn up square and replaced the West footings in 1994. Well we used the building in its poor condition (but useable) until just this summer when we started to restore the barn. This was all inspired 3 years ago when a retirement home van came pulling up to my place and two of there workers assisted a very old man out of the van and he approached me and said..."I would like it very much if I could stand in the barn one more time before I die, I was 6 years old when my dad and the neighbors built that barn" I was very happy to show him around in the old barn. He stood in the middle of the barn remanissing about how he and his sister would spend hours swinging from the rope and he would throw his knife at this one pole of the barn. It was a nice trip down memory lane for him and a inspiring history story for me about a building on my property that i was now in charge of its care. I wrote down what he said before he left about the date it was built and his name and decided this summer to restore the building. In the process of tearing out old interior panels lodged in behind one we found a knife and it beared his initial still carved in the handle! (I will post a pic of it tonight) Anyway we are going to bring the barn back and use it to store classic cars on the main floor and use the 2 and 3rd floor as a party barn. I thought it had enough progress to finally put up some pics. Enjoy,
