Yah, they are taking away your freedoms of being ignorant....
You are still free to read or not read the "required reading". All you have to do is open it and close without looking at the words in front of you and done! There are no freedoms taken from you by the site in doing this per say. Even if you do end up reading it, there is no harm in it, they just want to cover their butts so no one can say, "Why wasn't I told?"
?? Informing users of important information regarding the forums = cover their butts?
and here I thought they were just helping to inform the forum user about important changes / issues so they are not confused.

As mentioned, the Mass PM system and the Please Read feature are only used in the event that there is something important that the management of Snowest would like you to take a look at and thus be informed about. Often times the contents of these events will only help you to understand what is going to be happening soon or why something is currently happening without the Admins or Mods having to answer the same question 50 times over.
If you choose to ignore the contents of the PM or directed thread, that is up to you, but please understand that it was put up for your benefit as well as ours. It only takes a couple extra minutes to become informed on the topic, so we would encourage you to please not ignore these... even if you just skim through them.

There's nothing new there. Tons of websites make you look at an announcement or a rules of use change or an advertisement before they will let you move on to the content you want to see. And this way no one can say they didn't know-- or at least not without admitting they got the message but refused to read it.
And yet, I am still getting e-mails and PMs from members that have no clue whats going on and are asking me the very questions that those letters address.
Just because I force you to go to that thread, doesn't mean I can do anything at all to get you to actually READ any of it !

I don't understand the irritation with being informed. People say that this is being done underhandedly or skeakily, so they're all directed to a thread that explains it so they understand what's up but they complain aobut that as well....

We tried very hard NOT to surprise anyone with this conversion after Harris made the public announcement last November. Tried to let a few months pass by, but there were plenty of people caught unawares when we implemented the first stage of the "Free User" transition.
You know those tags were in place 10 days before we made any changes to the accounts..
