Reputation of Colorado Universities?

Hey guys... I'm not looking for too much explanation but I don't know anyone in Colorado and I just need some reassurance more than anything... Here's my story: :D

I have been applying to MBA programs across the nation. I applied to 2 schools in Colorado because I feel like it would be an awesome place to spend a couple years (or maybe more). I was rejected at CU Boulder which shocked me but I did get into DU.

Surprisingly, as far as rankings are concerned, DU seems to be ranked better than CU and is by far the larger business program.

Does anyone here have any experience with these 2 colleges or maybe work in a company that has hired their graduates?

If you can speak to DU's MBA program at all I would really appreciate it. My next best offer is in Cleveland, and I really don't have any desire to move there! :)

If I do choose this route, where would I look to live. My wife works in Radiology. Are there any areas that would be advantageous to live for both of us near campus with a hospital around?

Thanks before hand!!! Bryce

My wife attened the executive MBA program for CU out of Denver. It was a great program and she made some good connections. She works for HP and they payed for the whole thing..sweet..

I would think either would be better than moving to Cleveland!

Not to mention world class sledding withing hours in most directions. You could hit a different trailhead every weekend and never ride the same place

I like the sound of that!!!

Thanks Dizzle for your input. ;) The catch is that the school in Cleveland has left a considerable amount of scholarship money on the table. I want to pick the best fit for me, but I'm getting cheap...

CU is full of hippies... i can't stand boulder. Can't say much for the business school as i'm in engineering; know and work with a few people from CU and DU engineering... Both decent schools, but there's no way in hell i'd go to CU (Or CSU).

I've heard DU has a good business school though, if you don't mind living in denver.

Go Pokes!

I work in Boulder and have hired part time employees from CU Boulder. I have also spoken at one of their business organization.

It's def a "different place", not really "reality", I've hired some great kids from the school but overall it hasn't been easy finding them. Lot's of rich kids.

We've actually been considering moving our company out of Boulder to be able to get access to more "hungry" grads.

Boulder as a town is not reality either.

My GF just got her graduate degree from DU. She worked full time through out the program so she never really got to know the other students. The ones I've met are pretty cool.

If you like snowmobiling and enjoying the great mtns then go to DU. If you want to worry about your carbon footprint then go to CU.

What's the matter CSU too civilized for you? :D

I go to CSU, and it is a great school, but since that is not the subject....

DU is a great school. I know a few guys that are going there for Law School, and a couple of my bosses went their for their MBA program. I would recommend it. Denver is a pretty cool city. There is a lot to do there and sledding is easy access.

In all honesty CU is a good school, the people that live in Boulder aside I would still go to school there.

Um... well, having grown up in Cleveland, OH and now living in Crested Butte, CO - I hear your concerns.

When I think of CU Boulder, I think: Ward_Churchill Nuff said.

The sledding in Colorado is definitely better; although the cost of living is probably double or more. I think you can get a 2 for 1 deal on houses in Ohio these days w/ good credit.

DU is a well respected, top notch school that is a cornerstone of Denver's Higher Ed community. It's not cheap, but they keep dumping untold millions into the facilities there. I can't imagine you'd be disappointed doing your program at DU. The liberals may be just as embeddd at DU as CU - who knows.

You can live nearby Denver, Wash Park, Englewood or even downtown. You're minutes from downtown, and just over an hour to Summit County and Vail (assuming zero traffic, tail wind and police escort). There are several hospitals withing a stone's throw for the wife to look at.

Cost of living in Denver compared to Cleveland is out of sight.
Traffic is a huge issue - ala SanFran, DC, etc..
Easy flights to west coast is nice if you need them.

That said - which university in Cleveland were you offered? If it's Case Western Reserve - you might consider doing it for the 2 yrs or whatever it takes, then moving west. Cleveland is the epicenter of medicine - if your wife wants Radiology experience the Cleveland Clinic is the best in the world. If you business aspirations are medicine related - The clinic is where you want to be.

In Ohio, you can ski on 400' mountains, and snowmobile in wet/sloppy snow 3mos/yr or travel to western NY on the weekends for better conditions. Cleveland is a surprisingly nice area - but doesn't hold a candle to the quality of life offered in Colorado.

Denver = Sunshine.
Cleveland = Rain.

Best of luck.

MtnDoo

Crested Butte = Snow. ;-) ( but no MBA program)

Pretty much all school are pretty Liberal. It is pretty much the nature of the beast. There are a few exceptions.

There are plenty of hospitals in Denver, your wife won't have a problem finding a job.

There are probably 6 downtown and another 5 within the city.

Hey guys...

I really wanted to thank you all for your input.

I just wanted to update anyone who cared to read that my wife and I did decide to make the move to Denver this summer. I am very excited for the prospects in and around Denver when I graduate and overall I think it'll be a good fit for us coming from Washington to Colorado.

So, I don't have a sled right now anymore... but, hopefully I'll be able to pick up something used this fall again and meet some of you guys. I can wait!

Snow show's 04-05 Oct 2008, denver merchandise mart 58th and I25. See you there :D

If you were "rejected" at CU, you probably failed the blood/alochol test---probably too low:beer;

Good choice and best of luck to you and your wife.

Yeah... they do things a little differently out there. Ever drove through that town? It's quite an adventure.

CU Boulder is full of QUACKS! DU is a good school and so is CSU, but I don't think that the school there is geared towards business. I think Fort Lewis has a good business program, I had some HS classmates go there for business but they never finished.

My sister went to DU and got a job immediately. Also my wife is a xray supervisor and says they are always looking for good techs. If your wife doesnt mind call she could work 7 days a week making pretty good money the minute she got to Denver.

I'm jellous!!! Wife and I moved to Portland, OR almost two years ago. Live in Denver my whole life before then. Our house is on the market now... were are trying to move back. Can't beat the Colorado sun and champaigne pow! Wife grew up in Portland, 10 years in Denver, now she can't bear the NW rain or the Cascade concrete in the winter.
