Replacing PTO/Mag Seals

I had to replace a bad PTO seal. I took everything apart, got new seals and I'm finally ready to put the engine back together.

I have a manual and it says to grease the PTO/Mag seals. Can anyone shed some light on how to do this? Is it just around the edge where the seal makes contact? or do you pack the inside of seal? do you do it at all?

Also, the manual refers to the use of cross shaft break in lube (PN 2872435) in the cross shaft area; Do you guys use this or will regular Polaris 2 stroke oil work? It's not a new crank.

Thanks,

Dave

just put grease on the lip portion of the seals, and i just use the 2 stroke oil

I have found that what works the best is wheel bearing grease. 2 stroke will not stay with it long and is not good to use. Polaris says to yous a good all weather grease and wheel bearing grease fits that to a tee.

let me refraze i grease the seals with grease and just fill the cross shaft with oil. oil is what lubes it anyhow and if it is the original shaft and crank it is already "broke in" built many a motors this way with no problems.

Usually use white assembly grease on lips and pack the backside. Greasing outer sides could/will cause failure.

Ok so I talked to the dealer and their mechanic. The break in lube is discontinued so it's gonna have to be oil.

The mechanic said that I shouldn't use VES oil....anyone have thoughts on this? VES is ok? non-VES 2-stroke oil? synthetic 2-stroke oil? 10w40? Should I use the same for all three chambers in the lower half of the crank case (2 are where the connecting rods come down and 1 is in the center...probably the cross over area?) Doesn't the oil system provide oil to all three of these areas meaning that VES should be fine for all three. The only one I question is the center resevoir (cross over area)?

Also, the mechanic said that he likes to use the 3-bond sealant on the outer edge of the seals (MAG/PTO) to help ensure no air leakage. Anyone have any thoughts on this? good or bad?

The grease goes on the part of the seal that makes contact with the crank shaft.

I'd really like to make sure that I've done everything in my power to ensure the longest life possible for my 900 engine if you know what I mean.... so I'd sure appreciate any thoughts on the above from you guys that have the experience.
