Anyone have any comments? Just looking for something I can do some target shooting and plinking with.

Remington is 180 with a scope vs 275 for the stainless/synthetic Ruger without a scope.

Thanks in advance.

LOVE my 10/22. first gun i ever could call my own. have had the most fun with that then any other. solid built, hardly ever any jams, even when not properly taken care of.....:O really like the clips for them and almost endless possibilities as far as upgrades and mods.....cant say bout the remington....?

if your not going to do anything to them get the remington, price is right and it'll plink just fine.

if you think you might start modding it get the 10/22, azztons of stuff out there aftermarket for the 10/22

Ruger set the standard for semi auto 22s. Buy the ruger and never look back. Go to a pawn shop find a clean one for $150.00. I have 4 of them one is all butler creeked out, that is a supreme plinker!

Yes, the 10/22 is reliable, but the 597 is more accurate. I don't know if it was the two 10/22's I shot, but they were only good for 1 1/2" groups at 50yds, they can be VERY accurate, but it takes a lot of money to get them to shoot straight. If you can stand a bolt action, I ended up with a CZ452 trainer that completely satisfies my need for accuracy! Seriously, for a $262 22lr that will shoot right along side my buddies $1200 Anchutz(I murdered that spelling!) Good for sub 1/2" groups @50yds every time you pull the trigger! Even a couple sub 1/4".

Great info guys, keep it coming. I'm more interested in plinking from a distance, and accuracy is important. This is my first gun and I'd like to start out with something that's both reliable and accurate. If it's used to shoot anything live, it'll be pests (magpies, gophers etc)

Motley, your gay, nobody wants a bolt action .22... heheheheh.

Love my 10/22, and beeing able to accept 25-30 round mags makes it a gopher SLAYER!!!

the thing is rock solid, cheap, and infinite amounts of mods.

I have 2 597's 22mag in a LSHB and a 17hmr in syn. the 22mag version is my all time fav. gun. What was said earlier about the 597 being more accurate out of the box is true. They have it over the 10/22. The aftermarket is getting better for the 597 but NOT EVEN CLOSE to the 10/22. Both off the shelf have REALLY bad heavy triggers. The Remi 597 is a easy fix. For $35 get a VQ hammer (a hammer swap on the 597 is very easy don't think you need to be a gunsmith to swap it out) it will drop it down to about 2 1/2 pounds compared to 6 in stock form. The lighter trigger from the VQ hammer will make accuracy even better. The Remi just feels and looks better to me than does the 10/22 and you will have something alittle different.

Ive got a 597... I like it.. i am not able to shoot the cheap federal hollow points.. they jam... at least in mine but other than that there awesome and cheap to shoot.

I've owned too many 10/22's over the years, from base model to full custom with the only thing left from the original rifle is the receiver. Right now I've got a stock 10/22T (heavy barrel) in stainless with a decent trigger job and a Leupld on top with no plans for modding it. Of the two, the 10/22 is my favorite. There are benefits to the 597 too, there's really nothing wrong with the gun and the price is right. With the money saved buying the 597, you can afford a better scope or more ammo to practice with. I tend to spend more money on the scope than the rifle, as I believe that good glass is just as important as the gun it is mounted to. Then, having enough ammo to practice with is more important to accuracy than any mod ever done to a rifle.

Since you mentioned that this is going to be your first gun, go cheaper, buy a decent scope, and buy as many different types of ammunition that you can find. 22LR's tend to be ammunition sensitive, not all ammo will shoot in every rifle the same.

Also, as Motley already mentioned, don't rule out a good bolt action just yet. A person tends to be more focused on each shot with a bolt gun, it removes the tempation to blast through a magazine as fast as possible. I'm assuming that you haven't shot too much, so not learning bad habits is far easier than breking them in the future.

I dont get it... it sounds so cool to unload the 10 shots as fast as i can pull the trigger....:D what you said is true.. even i shoot and take my time nothing makes you consentrate more than having to load one manually with a bolt action or lever...

I had a Remmington 597 for awhile ... only gun I ever bought ...

I never liked it as much as all my buddies Ruger 10/22's ... definatley not as many accessories available for it.

It seemed like it needed cleaning a lot more than the 10/22's did too for some reason.

I have a 10/22 and it just collects dust now that I have the .17HMR

Jamming on the trigger and blowing el-cheapo rounds down range was hella fun....for ahwile.

Now my game has moved beyond that, now I prefer to pop a gophers head off at 300 yards.

I have a Savage .17HMR Cabelas edition with the pine ridge scope set up for the .17 looks like this, except black metal and add black scope

I have four that are 1" minus groups BONE stock. What ammo are you using?

favorite 22 auto

i have a winchester 77 tube fed that sure shoots nice.

also a bolt 67 that is money with open sights.

love those old winchesters

and for piney my old remington 511 shoots ok too

Love my Marlin .22mag stock as it is with a Bushnell 3-9x32 .22mag scope but my next go to rimfire plinker is a Ruger 10/.22 stock excep a Williams peepsite. Set it up as it is so my boys who are age 11 and 8, older boys anyways, so they can pratice on this setup for when they are ready for a Ruger Mini-14 .223 for moose hunting. And that chit worked! They both bagged their first moose with the Mini-14 with one shot. Guess it works.

QUOTE=pinecone1;912965]You must be blind, The name is not piney Blind boy. I know Remingtons shoot OK. Rugars shoot fantastic. But if you are blind how the hell would know.[/QUOTE]

OK. Just in case this comes out way wrong, let me just say that I just got done losing a few games of :beer; pong and I'm using the backspace key more than the rest put together, with one eye closed:eek:.

Pinecone1 STFU! If Remingtons shoot okay and Rugers shoot fantastic. Why are the military snipers using Remington 700's instead of Ruger 77's?. I just can't imagine somebody putting their life on the line with something that shoots OK, when there is something out there that shoots fantastic. Oh yeah, lowest bidder and all that, right? Well, Ruger would have been the lowest bidder if they could have put together a rifle to meet the standards, but they couldn't put a rifle together to meet the minimum standards.:p

I know, Apples vs Oranges. Cenerfire vs Rimfire. Two different types of rifles, but the same two companies none the less. What one does with what should be their best, they do less with their normal.

I love the 10/22. Probably my favorite rifle of all time. But, the 10/22 is not the best choice for everybody. Please don't be rude. Please be respectful of what others have to say. And please engage your brain before engaging your mouth.

And that's the end of my second rant today, thanks for listening.

I didn't think that Moose and .223 belonged in the same sentence, then I saw the pictures. Well done!
