Relocating Northern Idaho?

I may possibly be relocating to the Coeur D'alene area of Idaho. Curious as to what the riding is like in the area? How far to the "good" riding. Any other info on the area ie: schools, best area to live, cost of living etc. would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

There is trail riding just outside of town. The good off-trail riding is 80 miles to the East and South East and about 70 miles to the North. The good riding elevation is 4,000 to 6,500 feet.

I think all the public schools are good in the area. There are two high schools in CDA, 1 in Post Falls, 1 in Rathdrum and more a little further out. There is also a highly ranked charter school here in CDA.

I am no real estate guy or expert in this feild but I think there are a lot of nice homes for sale in the area, the prices are much lower than 4 years ago. A good 4 bedroom home is about $140,000 to $200,000.

I think the cost of living will probably be higher than SD but probably not by a lot. Unemployment is high here, probably close to 10%.

There are a lot of tourists in the Summer. Many California folks come to vacation here in the summer. Some decide to move here and then move back after a couple of snowy winters.

4th of July pass is about 10-15 miles out of CDA and has some good off trail stuff but it is not easy to find, plenty of trail riding. 60-70 Miles North of CDA near Sandpoint has some great riding: Pack River, Roman Nose, & Trestle Creek. http://www.idahosnow.org/Default.aspx?pageId=529523

70 miles East of CDA at the MT - ID border is Lookout Pass and it has a ton of Great riding and usually recieves the most snow.

I am relocating to Billings, MT in June, are there any riding areas near Billings?:face-icon-small-coo

Thanks to everyone for their replies! I am looking at properties most of them 10 to 15 miles out of Coer D'Alene. Just wondering which ones would give me an oppurtunity to "ride from my door". I understand the "good" riding will involve trailering aways, but some times nice to go for a quick couple hour ride with the kids. One of the properties is south west of town 15 minutes couple miles off the lake. Is there riding in the group of hills/mtns south/west of CDA? The other one is north of Rathdrum just several miles north/east of Twin Lakes. Also any difference in schools between the two areas? Thanks!

If you know where your going theres some good riding on Rathdrum Mtn and behind that which is near Spokane Mtn. I also live in Rathdrum and theres not really any "ride from your house" places unless you want to go ride around in fields, etc... or if your moving to some property near the mtn. There is also great riding just north from Rathdrum. Bunco is very close next to Silverwood and has some decent riding, nothing crazy though.

We are in Rathdrum (Twin Lakes) and unfortunately Inland Paper closed their area off to sledding so we don't sled right from the house anymore but several good trail heads very close by.

Can't comment on the schools as our kids are grown.

Curious to how many spots in the area are closed to sledding. Like are the Couer D'Alene mts open to sledding? Is all of mt Spokane open? The Mts north of Athol. Just curious, Thanks!

The only place I'm aware if is inland paper land but don't let that worry u as that is only a sliver of what we have open to ride in.

C d'A, Sandpoint, Priest Lake, 4th of July etc all great places

You can purchase Inland Paper passes to get onto their land, Spokane Mtn has some good riding but you have to be careful as to getting close to the ski runs. There are some closed areas up north around Bonners that are closed due to the caribou but the state provide maps that show the closed areas.

I live northeast of Twin Lakes and not really a ride from your door area. There is some riding from your door places north of Spirit Lake (HooDoo Mtn). If you get to the base of mountains east of Athol you can access 400 miles of GREAT trail riding.

I teach at the High School in north Kootenai Co and my kids are going through the schools right now. Much different schools than the CDA and PF schools. More of a small school feel than the big schools.

Riding areas: Trail riding: 4th of July (I-90), Fernan, Bunco all accesses the CDA Mtns. GREAT trail riding that is well groomed.

Mix Riding: Priest Lake. Good trail riding on the west side and good mountain riding on the east side.

Guy riding: North - Roman Nose (Bonners Ferry), Pack River (N. of Sandpoint), Trestle Creek (East of Sandpoint). East - Burke (N. of Wallace), Lookout Area (MT/ID border).
