Refrigerators

My Maytag refrigerator that is only about 9 years old is going out on me and it is time to get a new one.

I have had so many problems with the Maytag product line (Front load washing machine that danced across the floor, dishwasher that the rack is rusting out and smells like a garbage dump, and a refrigerator that the door shelves fall out of the door, the plastic pegs that hold the shelves in are broken off, the defroster module keeps going out etc, etc)

So Maytag is out of my vocabulary. I have horror story after horror story on thier cruddy engineering.

I am looking at the LG side-by-side.

Anybody have a LG refrigerator that would care to give me an unbiased review? Good bad or ugly, I want to hear it.

I know, I know, this is a snowmobile site, but heck, this is fouled plug.

I have a side by side Fridgidare, Proffesional Edition, very expensive fridge...............................POS! It's 4 1/2 years old and I just had to put a compressor in it for $500.oo. The washer and dryer are fairly new and they both had to be repaired as well. They don't build appliances like they used to. My Mom and Dad had the same fridge, stove, washer and dryer for like over 15 years and did very little to them. Anyway, not to rant on forever but I've heard good things about LG. I think my next appliance will be an LG. Unless somebody else has any horror stories about LG?

ordered the thing last week from home depot. the price on the fridge was i think 1699.00 but when the lady ordered in it came up 1499.00 plus 10% off because it was a energy star appliance. so i think after said and done right around 1400.00 for the stainless. i had to hook it up to the water since i was a copper line and they dont mess with copper. i looked at a bunch of fridges before we settled on this one and this thing is a fridge of beauty. heck i think the door shelves will hold gallons of milk.

Good topic here, i have to purchase one in the next few weeks myself...

I did a look up on consumer reports and they talked about the Kenmore (Sears) Elite 5896 being a top pick at $1500. That LG sure looks sweet though...

Anybody else get one recently or had bad luck with one in the last 3-4 years?

hhhmmm me thinks you might need fire insurance with the LG

I have a side by side GE stainless. I hate everyting about it. Not the GE part but just the general design and styles of refrigerators these days. Side by sides are worthless for room. Stainless scratches like a mutha. I would go with a black top/bottom If I were in the market again. I guess everyone must have a freezer in their garage now days. Cuz you sure can't fit all that Costco stuff in a side by side. Now that I think about it, I wonder if I load too much beer in it.:beer;:)

Now back to snowmobiles.
Cheers

Whatever Breed you buy just make sure of the service. They're all crap IMO.Now a days it's who has the best service.Sears is pretty good.I just bought all the Mak Daddy appliances not from Sears but from Trail Aplliances and the service Blows! My .02

so you had problems with trails service???? good to know, i was gonna buy all my stuff thru them, but switched to sears for that simple fact!!!!!!!!!! plus i'm getting the kenmore all fridge and an upright kenmore all freezer that will go side by side in our new kitchen! it was a tough call, but i felt the service from sears would be better, especially since we don't live in town!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had good luck with GE Profile appliances over the last 10 or so years. We currently have two refridgerators, no issues with either of them.

I'm sure there are some nicer models (or more expensive ones) out there, but for the price I think they are hard to beat.

(disclaimer - we do get a friends/family discount on all GE stuff....)

All of our appliance are Whirlpool.
All are 18 years old & working good.
I kinda wish the fridge needed replacing so I'd have an excuse!;)

I highly recommend Whirlpool/Kenmore.

LG is simply the new name for Goldstar (Louis Goldstar=LG)
Not saying that's a bad thing, but Goldstar was known for being cheap.
I'm guessing the name change was to shake that image as they entered the cell phone market?

Whatever Breed you buy just make sure of the service.....................

You got that right.......

THe place where I bought it from does not support the product. They call Maytag. It was a nightmare to arrange for service.......

I will be buying from Sears. I have had it with the crappy service of independents........

Best frig I own is the cheapest frig I own. It is a cheaper Frigidare from Lowes. I didn't want to spend a lot of money for a frig at my cabin, but that thing keeps my liquids just above freezing. Just how I like it. mmmmmmm.COLD :beer;:beer;

Consumer Reports Ratings

Here are the "top picks" ratings for side-by-side models from Consumer Reports.

Large (36 inches wide or wider):

• Kenmore (Sears) Elite 5896[2] , $1500
• Samsung RM257AB[SH] , $2500
• Jenn-Air JCD2290HE[W] , $2300
• Hotpoint HSS22GFT[WW] , $760

The Kenmore (Sears) Elite 5896[2], $1,500, scored highest. The Samsung RM257AB[SH], $2,500, adds quietness and split fridge and freezer compartments that can freeze or chill; the Jenn-Air JCD2290HE[W], $2,300, adds superb temperature performance and cabinet-depth styling. Pick the low-priced Hotpoint HSS22GFT[WW], $760 (it measures 34 inches wide), if you can live without stainless-steel trim.

My buddy has some LG app. and they have been awsome with the service end. They totally rebuit the dish washer 3 times before finally replacing it, and all service completed within a few days. Like was said before, check out the service providers.

Close...... its actually "Lucky Goldstar", shortened to "LG". Its a Korean company. Their quality has improved a lot, from the junky boomboxes and VCR's they used to make.

Found this in "Wikipedia"

" LG Group, which stands for Lucky Goldstar, is a large South Korean conglomerate (chaebol), that produces electronics, mobile phones, and petrochemical products and operates subsidiaries like LG Electronics, LG Telecom, Zenith Electronics and LG Chem in over 80 countries. LG Group sponsors the LG Cup Go Tournament.

Created as an appliance company in 1947 named GoldStar (금성, 金星), it later merged with the chemical company Lucky. Many consumer electronics were sold under the brand name GoldStar, while some other household products (not available outside South Korea) were sold under the brand name of Lucky. The Lucky brand was famous for its hygiene products line such as soaps and Hi-Ti laundry detergents, but most associated with its Lucky and Perioe toothpaste.

In 1995, it was renamed "LG", the abbreviation of "Lucky GoldStar". More recently, the company associates its tagline "Life's Good", with the letters LG."

I would go with the Whirlpool/Kenmore first. I have had good luck with them in ovens, washer and dryers and Fridges. I do have to say that I do have an Amana fridge with the bottom freezer that has been awsome.

p.s. If you buy from Best Buy, you may want to purchase their extended warranty or you will be out of luck in the service arena. I had purchased a fridge from them ten years ago and did not buy their warranty, when the compressor went out less than a year later they told me to call the mfgr as they only service what is purchased with their extended warranty. This was ten years ago so their policy may have changed but, I no longer buy at worst buy.

Our fridge crapped the bed and it was 6 years old (Thank god for the backup a 1970's dog), the repair guy said that new appliances are not being built to last. My parents just had to get a new fridge as the one that they had since 1955 had a door problem and they couldn't get a part. MOST of the big box stores (Lowes, Best Buy, etc) get cheaper models (kinda like electronics at wal mart) and even though they are made by the same company they have MUCH cheaper components (they actually do that with all of their stuff, faucets, appliances, etc.). Get a good one from a reputable place or Sears and load up on the extended warranty. In this case you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ! ! !

PS The wife loves our whirlpool duet washer and dryer.
