Reflective Heat Tape

Guys-
I'm replacing the foam in my hood for reflective heat tape. Is the HVAC type tape from Fleet Farm or Home Depot OK or do I need the expensive stuff from automotive store? Thanks.

The HVAC stuff works great.

A little tip... buy a can of 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Spray it on whatever you want to stick the heat tape to, let it dry off per the instructions and then stick your heat tape on... it won't come off if you do that.

I have been using some cheep alu heat tape on my side panel's since December 2010 on my pro and it has been holding up great!

I only use the good stuff.

HVAC tape is for low temp stuff... It has flamable glue and is not really a good heat barrier.

This is on most of the NASCAR teams cars... And is really is in a league of its own...

On a $12,000 machine... I'll stick with the good stuff.

I understand the need for the tape on the panels but has anyone had an issue with their hood by not adding the tape once the foam was removed?

hvac stuff is good for up to 250 deg, well at least the stuff i sell is. has worked fine for me over the years. i highly doubt the stock foam is good for that.

We decided to leave the foam on the hood FOR now. How much water can really get soaked up in those small pieces of foam directly above the engine anyway? As far as the HVAC tape goes, all that is made for is wrapping insulation around duct work. But if it works, go for it. We used heat reflective tape from NAPA. What ever you use just remember paper burns at 451 Fahrenheit. What ever you put on your sled has got to be better than paper.

Thats what I'm thinking.
Is there someone that ran last season with no tape on the hood?

I removed the foam and didn't run tape on the hood last year and it is just fine. And, FWIW, I think HVAC tape is more than adequate - this isn't rocket science guys! A good quality HVAC tape will NOT need 3M adhesive either - mine is very difficult to remove once stuck down (Nashua Products waterproofing aluminum repair tape). Attached is a pic showing what you should cover on your exhaust side panel.

Have FUN!

Thanks for the offer, I'm going to try it without tape and see how things go but if I do change my mind I will definitely take you up on your offer.

Thanks again!
