Recoil Spring Help

Don't laugh, but I need some suggestions on how to get the recoil spring back into position. Every time I try so far, it explodes on me.

I would appreciate any tidbits or ideas to try on how to put the darn thing back together.

Thanks!

sorry, I laughed. That is a pain in the you know what to do. might need an extra set of hands to help you. Hopefully someone on here has a method that will help.

I ain't taking credit for this. Just copy and paste from a thread over on HCS. The OP is Don goes by XCR1250 and is a mod there. Would've just put a link to it but figured it would be great for the "how to" section.

Having a hard time winding a new or used recoil spring? This very simple method works, simply use a block of wood and 4 screws and the correct radius, use a compass to determine the circle, starting with the outer coils attach spring hook end on any screw and wind spring, once wound use 2 small tie wraps to hold spring and remove 2 opposing screws to remove spring, place spring in the recoil and cut tie wraps.

Here's what I did on Christmas Day with my wife breathing down my neck!:mad2: Place a c-clamp on the recoil housing holding the spring end in its place. Then place the c-clamp in a vise. Once you have the c-clamp in the vise and holding the end of the spring you can slowly work the ol snake back in to the housing one coil at a time, making sure you keep a finger on the opposite side of where the c-clamp is holding the end of the recoil spring. If you take your time you can do it yourself, i know because it did it on Christmas:biggrin1:. It's always easier with a buddy. Make sure you wind the recoil 5 or 6 times before you thread the new rope!

Always Helps ---

To have the little Woman Barking suggestions during this operation.

LOL.

I been there.

Just did mine last night. Start from the outside and work in. Set the housing in your lap, hook the outside first and get a few coils started then hold them down as you wind it in. It is a lot easier than winding it then trying to set it down in there. That is next to impossible. Once I got it going with this method it only took me a couple of minutes to put it together.
P.S. I'm not taking it back apart for pictures unless you can't figure it out then, with a few beers, I could be talked into it.

I tried the screws in the wood idea and it worked perfectly......I also figured out that I needed to give it a few winds before threading the rope through.

I appreciate all your help, it made it much easier.......I don't have much hair left to pull out.
