Real fuel savings with a chip?

W

wildcard

RIP Brian
At nearly $150 for a fill up, Im thinking it may be time for a chip. I don't need any more power but sure would like to get a couple of MPG extra out of my 02 7.3 Powerstroke. What have you used and how did it work?

I havent seen it. its more like getting more power at the same rate of fuel consumption. Increaced injection timing is the only way to get more power and POSSIBLY a bit more economy but not much. Increaced injection timing will slow spool up though.

IMO if you buy a chip for fuel economy your buying it for all the wrong reasons. although for the 7.3 a TS flip switch would be my first choice!

97 f-250 with 7.3

i used a hypertech programmer on my 7.3 (just a 40 horse)... i honestly noticied 1-2 mpg better (if i keep my foot out of it:p) the most noticable improvement on mine was between idle and 2k rpm, it runs smoother has more low end grunt and doesnt growl nearly as loud as it did around 1k rpm... as an added plus i got mine for free

Well, if I could get one for free Id do it in a heart beat. I was just wondering if there was a real increase in MPG. Two MPG might be worth it. Why is diesel so much more than gas now???? it used to be cheaper! Last tank was $3.78/gal.

I chipped my 07 hemi with an edge evolution along with stage 2 cold air intake and exhuast. If you drive it right the whole combo added like 4 mpg. But I find myself roasting the tires everywhere i go.

mpg's

ok first off let me say that yes you can get more power out of a chip-programer and yes you can get more mpg's out of you'r 7.3.this is from first hand real numbers of my daily driver.i have a intake and a DP-Tuner chip with the f5 switch, settings are 1,stock 2,40hp tow 3,80hp econ 4,140hp blow the tires of the thing, and kill the rice burners when they think they are fast between stop light's (that is if you can take off with out the tires smokeing, witch dodse'nt happen very often).i have seen in the summer mind you,on econ 19mpg,in town,24-25 highway empty, now this is when you can resist to crank it up on the guy who thinks he has something.now let's address the timeing thing, all of the settings incraese the timing and fuel,i see no turbo lag at all, infact mine spool's faster!second DO NOT BUY A TS CHIP UNLESS YOU'R TRANNY IS BIULT FOR IT!i had one for a month and it fried my 3rd gear and over drive clutchs.they up the line preasure to trick the tranny into thinking it has a shift kit.well it just kill's it faster.$1300 later i have a built tranny that will stand up to 450rwhp,and will pull my 45ft fithwheel like nothing.if you want a chip DP-Tuner is very well known for there's,just get on any ford psd site and you will be amazed buy how manny psd owners will stand by jody and his crew at DP-Tuner.jody will custom tune for you'r truck for what you will use it for,not just here u go hope it works out for you chip.if you have any dout's of what i say do the research and u will find out the same thing i did (but hopfully it dosnt cost you a tranny)and give powerstrocked 162 a pm ,and he can tell you the same he told me from first hand knloedge.good luck and keep on rollen ,and remeber if she don't blow black-tacker back!

just do the math... i know you can get at least 2 mpg with a chip(assuming you ignore the urge to roast your tires every time)

27 gallon tank = 54 extra miles from the chip

54 miles from your old MPG (17-18 mpg highway?) is roughly 3 gallons of fuel saved.

3 * $3.50 = $10.50 per FULL fill up saved with the chip

assuming you fill up FULLY 2 times a month = 24 * $10.50 = $252 saved per year. Chip pays for itself after 3 years OR faster depending on how much you actually drive...

I've got the DP Tunner as well (40,80, 120), and regularly see 2-4 mpg increases in 80 and 120 settings. The truck also has a 4" exhaust, Tymar intake and wonder wheel.

The most difficult thing to do, which I tell my customers, is to keep your foot out of it after you have done a programmer. We see 2-4 mpg gains on Edge programmers on level 3 and 4, the same for Bully Dog products. A good Intake and Turbo back exhaust though can get you 1-2 on their own in easy driving.

One way to test. Find a local Bully dog dealer that has the 5 hour download. Hit them with a full tank and go drive easy for 2 hours, then top off your tank and calculate fuel mileage. Then do 2 more hours driving hard. Fill and calculate again.. The 5 hour demo is drive time not just 5 hours in a row.

Make a concious effort to mileage drive and you can see if there is a difference.

Tell ya what Wild card, I have a Hypertech tuner that I will send you. If you like it send me $150 clams. If you don't, just send it back. Fair enough? Holy crap Phatty, are you bored!

Another DP Tuner here on a stock 7.3L crew cab long bed 4X4 350. I run a stock-20 high altitude tow - 40 tow- 80 econo. On the 80 econo empty I get about +2mpg on the highway. If I did an intake it may help more. My mileage is usually 12 in town and 14 highway around Colorado (5000-10000 feet) on the stock setting, about 16 in econo mode running 65 to 75 mph. I paid somewhere around $350 for the chip and $350 for guages so I'm not sure if economy is a good reason. I wanted extra juice to get my fifth wheel over up some of the steep hills and passes in the Mnts.

If you want to get a chip Jodie at DP-Tuner is great. I also recomend going to ITP diesel for the guages. They have great prices and very good directions for self-install.

I have a duramax(sorry to get in the middle of this ford guys) but ive got the edge juice with attitude and a 4" turbo back exaust and an sb stage 2 cold air intake. With the edge only i noticed about 2 mpg better. With the addition of the intake and exaust paired with the edge juice i now see between 3 and 4 mpg's better. Not only did i gain the economy, but it will tow my loaded 27' enclosed trailer up a 6% grade at 80 mph and not even shift down!! Before the goodies i could do about 70 but the ol duramax was definately blowing some smoke. So to make a long story short, i definately recommend the upgrades. You will gain the economy and as mentioned before, the fun factor is awesome!
