Radar Detectors

Anyone who thinks radar detectors are a waste of money doesn't speed on a regular basis...period!
And anyone who has only been saved a couple times (over years) from a ticket doesn't speed either.
That said, I've had Escort detectors for 20 years, since I bought one of the first big square box ones.
Have a Passport that is about 14 years old. Works great. only thing I don't like is the volume is not very loud. Cannot have the radio up at all and hear it go off. It's in the wife's truck. 2AA batteries will last about 50hrs of continuous driving (est). You can go from NM to WI and back on 1 set of batteries.
Also have a Passport 8500, works very well. 6-7 yrs old now. Has flashed "service required" a couple times in the last couple yrs, but goes back to working fine the next day. Mute button on the cig adapter is handy. Volume is very loud, enough to hear over the stereo cranked.
Only ticket's I've had with either were from oncoming cops using instant on, and even in those cases, it's saved me a couple times. Just get a flash of the gumballs as I'm grabbing pavement with the front bumper!
If you hammer the brakes, the instant it beeps from an instant on KA radar, it's quick enough to save you. Got a ticket for 68 in a 55 in Arizona. Was doing about 100mph, came over a rise......zap! I hammered the brakes and then let off thinking I'd slowed down enough. Cop still got me at 68mph because that's where I let off the brakes and he locked on. He told me the detector saved my @ss. Said his readings flashed like 93, 85, 75mph and didn't lock until I let off the brakes, so that's all he could get me for.

Radar detecors.... are made by the somne of the same companies that provide the radars to the Police... hmmmm

I have had just about every reasonable detector out one the market over the last 15 plus years ranging from a few hundred dollars to over five hundred... I have had varied success with each... and have been lucky with most... but they do give you a FALSE sense of security and do not protect against all types of Police speed inforcement... Radar detectors detect Radar... not Lazer... which are more and more prevalant now days... The one thing I have been able to say is that I was able to use and sale each and every one of those detectors to some fool hardy individuals...

If you speed a lot, sooner or later you will get a ticket and no radar is going to stop that... not even that Stealth bra stuff works... again if you want to have a FALSE sense of security by all means spend the money...

Oh and I have been to some of those demonstrations pushing their detectors... funny that they never have a non-bias Speed inforcement presence... on and they seem to only allow Radar and not Lazer... hmmmm

won't do a damn thing with aircraft surveillance. No radars or lasers involved in that operation.

Just a stopwatch and some lines on the highway.

I've had quite a few and have had the best luck with the escorts, but like it's been said, any radar detector is only as good as the cop runnin the gun.

It's getting deep in here, time to get my shovel.

Did you maybe think that driving the speed limit and obeying the traffic laws might be the right thing to do. You know, for your safety and everyone else on the road around you?

VASCAR does the same thing in a patrol car. Try to beat that Speeders.:D

Jake you sound like a cop and that's fine but just because I consistently speed doesn't mean I'm putting myself or others in danger. There's tons of miles of Oregon highway that's 55 and there's nothing out there. I can buy urban/residential speeding is about safety but in the open country speed limits are just for state revenue.

I knew some Dudley do right would post on this thread sooner or later.

This is a thread about radar detectors. WTF does this have to do with the price of tea in China?

alright guys let me "splane" some inside knowledge for you. MOST city polices state that we shouldn't stop unless the speeder is at least 15 over. ( I said MOST). that's City.

county's that's a different story. Yes I travel back and forth across NEV. two or three times a year, yes I indulge in a little right foot driving (theirs nothing in NEV. to look at at night). for the most part I set the cruise at 9 over. sometimes more. but only when I'm alone. (my passengers are VERY expensive)
I know for those Manly men that's not speeding! to be honest I don't care how fast you drive by yourself, on a long EMPTY road.

If you would be willing to study up on some physics about stopping distances and reaction time. Then look at some high speed accident photos you would find your self slowing down.

as far as radar detectors go all the officers I know squeeze the trigger (instant on) no we don't have a lock. the highest speed we read and the highest pitch we hear that's your number pal. ya their is a lot more to it than that (it's a 8 hour class just for radar, lidar)

so as the posts above, slow in the residential areas and knock yourself out in the county. just don't ***** when you do get stopped!! man up and don't lie about it. the worst your attitude the bigger the ticket!!

oh ya and write a note explaining to your loved ones why you killed yourself doing 180 across open highway and leave it in the car, so all we have to do is read it to them. that alone would make our job a LOT easier

rant over continue on!

Oh, and hope your day gets better.

Keep telling yourself that.

Just got escort X50, returning it for some reason combines and large tractors set it off. It's just not worth having with all the fasle alarms.

Don't do it any more but the best way to avoid aircraft is with a police scanner. Works well. And when you see the lines on the road, start looking overhead. They can't hide the planes.

Kind of fun listening to the scanner when they are working it. Then rolling down the road and sure enough they are pulled over along side the road.

covered there too :)

Car-to-car gets interesting at times. A lot of jurisdictions are going to digital trunk systems, making the equipment to receive those non-dispatch channels a lot harder and more expensive.

Negative my friend. That would be his own personal policy, but officers do not have to "lock" in your speed.

I've had a Valentine for 7 years now. Works great. As others have said, you have to know how to use it and how to play the cop/speeding game.

They definitely work when used in conjunction with common sense. If you're getting tickets with a detector, you're an idiot.

I have an Escort 8500 and would not recommend them. After a year it would go into calibration required mode quite often and stop working. At about 18 months it went into that mode perm. Escort said send it back and for $100 we'll send you a refurbished unit. No thx jokers. Haven't decided on a replacement. Not much out there except planning and strategy will help at 180 lol.

Has anyone else had farm equipment set off their detector? What would be on a tractor that would put out radar?
